The reason why people say to put salt in the water is it makes the water boil faster, I dunno if this is true or not. Thats some nice getti.

i know salt increases the freezing point, i.e. snowy places put salt on the snow/ice and it melts. Hell do it in your kitchen, cube of ice, some salt and you got salty water in a few.

Salt is used to raise the boiling point of the water. It's better to throw pasta in extremely hot water, than to throw it in right when it starts boiling.
