retarded oil pump question
If you reverse the rotation of an oil pump will it still function and just flow in the other direction? Or do the pumps only work if they rotate in the direction they were designed for?
|
Re: retarded oil pump question
im pretty sure they're made to go one way..
|
Re: retarded oil pump question
Not sure how well it will work with the pressure relief valve.
Theres just a little spring in there that basically sets the pressure. If you reverse it, how will it be able to control pressure? |
Re: retarded oil pump question
depends on which style oil pump you speak of.

Here's the pump: http://www.hmt-tv.com/hmt/matt/Banshee/DSC00879.JPG http://www.hmt-tv.com/hmt/matt/Banshee/DSC00882.JPG |
Re: retarded oil pump question
reversing flow will not work.
|
Re: retarded oil pump question
What regulates the flow on that? can you see a spring/diaphram anywhere?
|

What you see is what is there. There's no spring or anything. I'll go double check... |
Re: retarded oil pump question
i assume this is for a car yes?
wouldn't reversing the flow, suck up oil around your head and shoot it out your pickup :S |
Re: retarded oil pump question
Ok here's this fucker completely disassembled:

You assume wrong. Its for my project, pump goes here: http://www.hmt-tv.com/hmt/matt/Banshee/DSC00874.JPG Its for a 2-stroke application everything's custom |
Re: retarded oil pump question
im pretty sure reversing the rotation would reverse the flow since you're reversing the mechanical operation of the pump.
|
Re: retarded oil pump question
just curious of why you want to reverse the flow? or is that the only way you can get it on?
|
Re: retarded oil pump question
I know this doesnt really relate to the oil pump's flow.. but
2stroke with an oil pump? help me |

Re: retarded oil pump question
I dont think it will work perfectly because the timing is different, (when the oil enters and leves the pump but that doesn't mean it wont pump enough oil to keep a snail lubed. I would just make a bench tester for it 8)
|
Re: retarded oil pump question
it'll work fine in reverse, but the flow will be reversed.
|
Re: retarded oil pump question
unless its a spring type oil pressure regulator tyhats hidden in the block somewheres, nice way t ---- something up in a hurry,
|

space is limited, it would fit better if I could mount the gear the other way. I have to fit this whole thing in the space below the shiney thing (water pump): http://www.hmt-tv.com/hmt/matt/Banshee/DSC00872.JPG

Re: retarded oil pump question
so are you just trying to rig up an external pump type deal? if thats the case i don't think it would matter which way it spins, but I don't know anything about springs/diaphrams controlling the flow :1

Its not exactly "rigging" I'm using an Rz350 sidecover and machining the oil injection pump shaft to fit a Honda 300ex oil pump to get the pressure I need. I just need to make the shaft on the right look like the shaft on the left and I'm done. http://www.hmt-tv.com/hmt/matt/Banshee/DSC00881.JPG |
Re: retarded oil pump question
any other input?
|
Re: retarded oil pump question
drive the oil pump with an electric motor. You can pre lube before you start the engine up too
|

Lol, this whole pump setup is to avoid an electric pump. They take up too much space, weight and draw too much electricity |

Re: retarded oil pump question
I think that since it is a gearator style pump that it will be fine.
|
Re: retarded oil pump question
It uses reed valves on the intake and a port on the exhaust. It will work just fine.
|
Re: retarded oil pump question
With no regulator aparent my vote goes for using it either way. The flow will be equivilent either direction.

wtf does that have to do with anything? ??? |
Re: retarded oil pump question
nothing really, I was high as ----.
However, if you look at the inlet side opposite the outlet porting the blockoff (to stop it from reverse flow) is nearly lined up with the center of the shaft. You may loose some efficiency, but it will work. Anywya, if you want it to work perfect, why not an idler gear? You might even be able to run it off the water pump gear. |

Its already designed. Its running off the crank gear. I'm machining the shafts this weekend |
Re: retarded oil pump question
oh, i completely forgot to post.
i asked my autoshop teacher, and he couldn't get his head around the question of "WILL IT WORK: YES OR NO?" but yes, it will work. he kept asking me why you need an oil pump on a 2 stroke lol :S |
