id say if you have a costco around you to get one from costco...get the top of the line laptop(or which ever works for you) then if you fucked something up between time of purchase(sp) and 6 months you can always return it and get another one.. costco almost always have some of the best stuff at costco

IBM is your friend those things last forever. I bought one on ebay had it for half a year and sold it to Projekteg/Kevin. I believe its still kicking. I'll find you something on ebay. I am selling my Inspiron 5160 but I want $700 for it since I just ordered an Inspiron 600m.

Here you go a eBay search for Buy it now IBM Laptops 400mhz or more 256mb of memory or more:

yeah, i'm still rocking my stinkpad i bought from biggmike almost a year ago i believe. it's 300mhz pII, and it's definitely more than enough for tuning, that's all i use it for, although i'm ready to upgrade now, it was well worth the 100 bucks i paid for it :D

I haven't followed the laptop market for a long time, last time I saw a Thinkpad it was huge and heavy, just like all the others ones I've seen.
