removing a T3 from a 80's 300zx ?

the junkyard has one its been sitting for awhile
not sure on the exact year of the car but its a
mid 80's 300zx the turbo is super wedged between
the driver side engine bay wall, totally fugly to get to...

pretty much the only choice is to pull the whole engine
and take it off from there, do i really want to spend that
time on it?

option 2 buy a 180$ portable sawzall i've found online
and cut the driver side off the car and take it off easily.

any other options guys?

is there anything anyone wants off this car, i'll charge what the PnP charges + 15% +3$ shipping anywhere in the usa. ( i work at fedex i can ship anything for 3$, too bad i cant receave for that price)

you have to get to it from underneath..... what's the point of buying a 180 dollar sawzall plus the price of the turbo from the yard? you could buy a lot nicer turbo and not have to work to take it off

Re:removing a T3 from a 80's 300zx ?

been under their cant ge to the bolts on the turbo. atleast not all of them, and its an excuse to buy a 500$ sawzall for 180 and the turbo is only 40$

Re:removing a T3 from a 80's 300zx ?

Even if I worked at fedex, I'd still pay to send stuff UPS, hehe.. That's a low blow, but after my friends $2,800K "high nickel alloy" racing block was broke by fedex, then they broke my projectors too, I'll never use fedex for anything.

On the flip side, can you give the junkyard dudes a couple bucks ( or ask them ) to prop the car up on its side kinda so you can access the bottem...

I pulled one off before a while back. It's definetly one of the harder ones to get, but worth it. I remember removing or disconnecting the steering shaft. Also removing the cross over pipe. The manifold/turbo had to be disconnected from the head and moved around to get the bolts from under the car. It takes time, patience, and no sawzall.

Re:removing a T3 from a 80's 300zx ?

The good news is its a .60 AR compressor on those, just like the T bird turbo. Almost like a small T3/T4. The bad news is the exhaust housing is a little wierd and hard to work with if I remember correctly, I might be thinking about the 240 SX turbo on the exhaust. Its a good turbo for a B18 motor and definetly worth $40.

The trim on it is very large and yes, the exhaust outlet/downpipe part is fugly. You definetly need to hack it off and weld your downpipe to it. I'll try to take some pics.

but a Nikota sawzall from Schuck's and warranty it out for your money back where you're done. Make sure it's an internal malfunction that doesn't destroy the case. Not all parts guys are as "understanding" as I am.

please dont buy them all before i get a chance
this thing usually sales for 450$...

i need a portaball sawzall for rear fender flairs at the junkyard and hard to get turbo's...
and this junkyard wouldn't turn the car on the side for me... just imigine thou, if all that crappy engine bay was out of the way how easy it would be to take it off...

yes things brake alot at fedex, i am getting alot of stuff shipped to me, from people i have to tell them the RIGHT way to wrap things, people dont understand after 2000-3000 box's a night, we really really dont give a ---- for 9.50 a hour.

Trust me, I work in a warehouse that ships 130,000-170,000 cases a night, I know what your point of view is.. I used to loaded there trucks for about a year and F--ked a lot of freight up, but it belonged to the company, not people, but I total understand...

Re:removing a T3 from a 80's 300zx ?

the exhaust/flapper flange is different than normal T3's so you cannot swap in a different one.

compared to the huge T-Bird .60, you can see the size of the wheel is the same. Again, worth it in my opinion.

I'll try taking some pics vs. some other T3 turbos.

Re:removing a T3 from a 80's 300zx ?

I wonder if the exhuast wheels are the same on both the SVO turbo and 300zx turbo.

If so you could just buy an exhuast housing from a volvo/svo garrett turbo and put the entire turbine housing on your 300zx turbo and that would eliminate the funky O2 housing problem, but that's only if it shares the same stage1 exhuast wheel.

the volvo (.42.48 ) turbo and the SVO ( .60/.63 ) turbo share the same exhuast turbine wheel.

Re:removing a T3 from a 80's 300zx ?

its funny cuzz i havent gotten the one from the junker yet.

but i bought one from a guy 2 weeks ago and it showed up tonite he told me it was off the mid 80s 300zx turbo, came w/ a greddy manifold, mx6 intercooler and bov, and down pipe.
for 300$

i couldn't pass on the deal, no shaft play.

he had it on his crx si, said he would hit full boost around 3600 rpm all the way to red line and it was a really great ride. he was parting it out, and already sold his boost gauge and his dsm 450's. he never ran the ic, due to problems with his daily driver, some american turd. so soon enough im gonna get in on those group buys for oil line and mendrel bent pipe.

i just happened to see the 300zx while i was at the jy, and i was like hey same car that mine came off.
holy ----, still has the turbo, i can get this one as a backup, i got on my back slide under the car
all the cars are raised like 1.5 feet sitting on welded steelies... and i so couldn't get at the turbo...
i looked, looked really impossible.

how many sawzall blades do you think it would take to get to it?

or how exactly do i get it all off?

Re:removing a T3 from a 80's 300zx ?

I am also running this turbo. The o2 housing/flapper is useless for us in its stock form and the bolt pattern is proprietary so if you want to stay internally gated you have to do a bit of work to make it useable or find a whole different exhaust housing. I had mine hacked off just past the o2 bung and had a 3 inch flange arc welded on. Has worked great for over a year now.

all my nice lil parts on the living room floor looking like a baby ready to be cleaned, took this oppurtunity to try to get all the excess rust i could off of the manifold w/ the white shop rag, i'll pnp the manifold and dremel the rust off this weekend.

mystery vac line plug that isnt there...
pretty sure with it open thats a major boost leak.
the guy i bought it from lead me a story about, how he lost the bolt he had in it while cleaning the turbo, then ran it for a few months still hitting 7lbs stock actuated, which im seriously doubting.

Re:removing a T3 from a 80's 300zx ?

Looks like the greddy manifold. I am using that same manifold as well with that exact same turbo! Mine does not say greddy like most of the ones I have seen so I am guessings its an older one or a knock off. Whoever had this kit before me made an adaptor plate to make it work. The mysterious vacuum port is not a vacuum port, its just where the 6th bolt to hold the compressor housing on is supposed to go. It will leak boost and cause a lot of lag, however I believe the 7 pounds because I have forgot to cap fittings before and it would still spool 7 psi, just lots more lag. People dont realize how much air a turbo can move that it can make that much pressure even with a big hole leaking it all out! It also probably causes the turbo to overspin way out of its efficiency range which is not good. Another tip is you may want to pick up an actuator off of a diffrent t3 if you want to clock your turbo differently since the stock actuator can only bolt on one way where most others can use any 2 of the 6 bolts on the compressor.

Re:removing a T3 from a 80's 300zx ?

i thought it was the old greddy also, but like you dosent say greddy so i wanted to know if it was a knockoff or not... no adapter plate they just redrilled new holes and used nuts and bolts to get the turbo to mount, it is really off when it comes to matching... the manifold is that weird hexish shape compared the the big turbo so im thinking either make a adapter plate or maybe just port match it as much as possible... he was saying 3500rpm all the way to redline he was getting full boost, im thinking of just using that bolt hole for a boost gauge, anyone's thoughts?

i've heard these things were 5.5 lbs stock and 7 lbs stock, anyone know?

I felt my wrx turbo with the charge pipe off while the car was idling at 1500 and that bitch was pushing some serous air !!
