im new to turbos but am really excited to get started on my first build.

im looking to turbo a suzuki sidekick 1.6 16valve engine. the engine has about 300 miles since a complete rebuild and is in a samurai based buggy that is mainly used for rock crawling and trail rideing.

so far i have saved my money and have enouf to do the build start to finish so heres what i plan to do.

t25 turbo oil and water cooled with a set wastegate at 8psi.
build my own log style manifold, 3 inch down pipe and do all my own charge pipes.
aem wideband air/fuel gauge.
aem boost gauge.
aem blow off valve
riseing rate fuel pressure regulater.

i know of a guy who is running nearly this same setup and has been haveing awsome luck for nearly 2 years. he boosts about 10lbs. and the engine is still running on the stock efi. he has a 15-1 air/fuel ratio at full boost and isnt running a innercooler, blow off valve and no riseing rate fuel pressure reg. so far he says hes had no issues what so ever so im looking to built a nearly identical setup for my self.

if im missing something or anybody here sees a problem with this setup please let me know know. im getting ready to order parts and would like to get the right parts the first time. thanks.

these are pictures of his setup that i copied from another site.

If the AFRs are OK, it can probably hold together, but would get better power and drivability if you have some way to retune your timing.

i believe the timeing is retarded just a bit on his setup. im not shure what else could be done to the stock timeing i think its all computer controled.

I can think of a couple different options if you want a better timing curve. Not aware of any options to retune the stock ECU.

1. Use a purpose built boost timing retard like an MSD BTM.
2. Use a piggyback that can control timing like a Greddy eManage Ultimate.
3. Go to standalone engine management.

ive thought about a megasquirt but in the end it would no longer be that simple easy turbo setup that im wanting.

at 8psi am i really asking to much of the factory efi?

with that other fellow running no riseing rate fuel pr and also 10 psi wich is another 2psi than i plan to do it seems that i may be in better shape then him and with him never haveing any issues it just makes me think that there may not be a need for all the aftermarket electronics.

also i priced out what it would take to use a innercooler and ill probly run one just to help keep things cool.

if i cant keep it really simple i may just consider a bigger engine like a toyota 3rz or something like that. i just dont want to complicate things to much.

There is a difference between getting it to work and getting it thoroughly dialed in to work at its best. The RRFPR and distributor adjustment is an example of getting it to work; redoing the timing curve is getting it thoroughly dialed in.

yep i understand what your saying and im kinda to the point of adding the easy ''getting it to work'' point now. its a rock crawler and will most likely be out of boost most the time but be able to add some added power in higher rpm situations.

i really like the sound that turbos make and think it would just kick ass to hear a blow off valve out in the woods.

thanks for the info i guess its just best to get the turbo on and see how it works. worst case i hate it and end up pulling it off and selling it. it wouldent be the first time i lost money on a deal. lol. if i can get the same results as the guy that i mentioned is getting i may be very happy with the ''getting it to work'' way of doing the turbo.

would a blow off be neccesary with only 8lbs of boost?

will i still get the blow off sound with this low boost setup?

is there any piggy back or or simple way to recurve the stock efi without haveing to replace everthing?

i dont know the first thing about turbos so all advice is welcome.

I'd run a blow off valve. Sound will depends on what BOV design you use. One joker on a K-car turbo forum ran his BOV through a train whistle...

The MSD BTM that I mentioned in my previous post would be a good way to make it pull timing in boost if you want a box that does only that (well, it also adds a rev limiter and a hotter spark).
