Racing Tips and Topics...

I'm going to run my car at the track shortly and I was curious of everyone's advice as to make my times a little lower and what not. I have a 98EX Coupe powerd on 10.5psi by a .42/.48. This is going to be done on some streets. Hankook HRII's. Currently, I'm just learning on launching and shifting without spinning and I can slip the gears so I don't spin at all, but should I spin a little or what? I remember Skinnye's thread, but it really didn't get too indepth as far as slipping the clutch and shifting and all. Just curious on everyone's take.

Tell your own techniques and what not. Just listening and reading everyone's perspectives on their own racing is cool, too.

That is from my other thread and it's not a good run at all I have had MUCH better and MUCH worse. Like I said I'm learning so any suggestions I would be more than happy to listen. Thanks guys! ;) ;D

who did your turbo kit???? its hard to learn reading, learn from ur mistakes n try what makes it feel faster. dump clutch at 3rd yellow not at green... do a burn out anyway even tho ur on streets... use launch control.

dont bother practicing, the track is much different than the street, and ---- the lights, drop the clutch when youre ready to go, whats more important too you, a good reaction time or a good 1/4 mile time, you choose

Re: Racing Tips and Topics...

i always had the best luck doing a light spin burnout out of the waterbox (dont get them wet, just give them a quick spin) and then work on feathered launches harder and harder until you find the sweet spot. dropping the clutch on streets never worked out well.

dude what is up with your sig scottsi. i really dont understand that thing. and id say just go to the track and run it. who cares what everyone else thinks. just teach yourself.

Re: Racing Tips and Topics...

dont go in the water unless you have radials or slicks. i always go around. dump on the third yellow. and who wants to sleep at the light if your bracket racing

samson 08-25-2005 09:06 PM

Re: Racing Tips and Topics...

So skip the box and go around it or just right through it. Go on the 3rd yellow. I don't dump the clutch on launches. I usually rev to 3500 and slip it out as I give it 3/4 throttle then roll into as full throttle and slip 2nd and 3rd while giving gas so I don't spin shifting at all. Does anyone suggest spinning any when shifting or just heavy slipping? I want a good 1/4 not reaction time, but the thing that's gay is the staging at our track is set to run people through quick. So you stage and as SOON AS BOTH ARE STAGED the top yellow then green. No time to really set a good steady rpm. That's gonna kill me. Thanks for all the replies though fellas! ;) ;D

If you can three foot it, you can try and make some bost off the line, but it takes a lot of practice

Clutch out a little, brake in with some gas? That sounds hard. LOL.

pull up the ebrake hahaha. go around the water. what i do is to get to the line before the other guy so you have time to rev to whatever you want to launch at

my friends laugh at me but i always like the right lane so i can look at the tach and the tree at the same time so i can get a good launch rpm and watch the lights too

Re: Racing Tips and Topics...

hopefully the track is flat so u dont have to brake, building up boost isnt going to do much for you as i already see you having traction problems without building it. Personally i like to slip the clutch a little, but dump rather high at around 5k rpm.... Better then bogging on. Key is not to get all excited after the initial launch, you have to let back off a tad about half way through the rpm band and then step on it again, from there on just smash as hard as you can and shift as fast as possible. Good luck man.
Tell your dad i give him props for getting own HMT style.
Hit us up with some track times and your progess.

samson 08-26-2005 07:17 AM

Re: Racing Tips and Topics...

Thanks guys. 5k seems kinda high. I slip the clutch long enough so that my launch is a little spin and wheel hop then off the clutch with 3/4 throttle to about 5500 then full throttle, spin to 2nd gear and slip the rest of them without even chirping. ;) ;D I think I'm going to go around the water pit so I can have time to stage. They drop the tree as soon as the 2nd guy has staged. Guess I'll just race to be the first to the stage. If I race those 350zs, LOL, I'll be set for 20 seconds before they get done warming up there tires. Still remains for me guys, do I spin or chirp any when shifting or try and slip so I don't spin at all through the gears? Suggested rpm to shift at? Right now I shift at like 7000-7250, although I spun 1st too much and hit like 7750. :-X Thanks again for all the replies!

I think he means have the pedal just below where it begins to disengage. I've always gone on the second yellow btw.

when i had my stock d15 in i would bring it up to 3kish and just dump and floor it it would spin all first then grab and go but now with the b18c(stock civic shocks) i launch at 2-25k and 1/2 throttle and i spin till 3rd but i think its cuz of my suspention

Pro-tree nukka. Unless of course test and tune MIGHT be regular. Rained out tonight so we'll see.

There's three yellows then a green right? That's a pro-tree? It's been a while since I've gone, but I'm sure I've always went on the second yellow. I react really slow to things though, so I guess it depends on the driver.

My guess was a 16.4 when it was N/A, probably much slower than that yet. I'm saying going from 16s, to near 13s is a little harder car to drive. LOL.

Pro-tree is staged, then top yellow, green.

delay box for the pro tree ;D jab the button as soon as the first red comes on then time your shiftlight for the best reaction time. :) we had a reaction time contest at the local strip buy in 10 bucks and winner got 250. i walked out of that bitch with 250 8)

Re: Racing Tips and Topics...

man, I'm pretty confused too. I JUST turbo'd my 94 civic ex with the z6, it was doing a 16.2 NA, and as of the first tim eto the track last night with it(mind you a TON of Bugs,Problems,Headaches to work out!)and could only do a best of 16.5 ET's but at like 89mph, instead of my old 16.2@83 sooo... ???, I'm used to High Comp. NA ls/vtec's not a boosted setup. I tried to sit there and pop the throttle at the lights so as to spool the turbo and not get lag, i got about a psi or 2psi right off the go, but had No traction issues taking off or between shifts... but that could be inpart from only being turbo for a week, with NO tinign really yet other than a conservative tune, and running 205/40/17's ??? not tryin to jack the thread but going along with the post, any reccomendations? O0

^^^ It's cool bro, that's why I posted. I knew others would have questions, too. Still wondering about the slipping of 2nd and 3rd. Do you slip so it spins a little or none at all? Rawr, I wish I knew what you meant. LOL. Push this button, at the red, I'm reading it going "What button? Red light? You jumped too soon then." LOL. Please explain a little better. Thanks! ;) ;D
