I wonder exactly what compound they were coated with? GBL has a distinct chemical smell, and 1,4-BDO would get you fucked up via transdermal ingestion (touching it) and it's pretty fucked up because 1,4-BDO is typically contaminated with it's precursor diols which = illness and kidney/liver problems, so I doubt either of those.
