Quick computer question....

Windows 2000 pro. How do I uninstall it? I need to erase this ---- and put XP on it. I'm not seeing the "erase operating system" button. ::)

Re:Quick computer question....

Put the Windows XP in the CD drive and let it boot off of it. I'm 90% sure that the Windows XP disc will let you format right from there (format, then install windows XP)

My personal opinion, stick with 2k ;)

Breaker84 09-09-2004 07:52 PM

Re:Quick computer question....

you just put the disc in and you can choose to overwrite your current operating system. Or if you think you have a virus or something, you can just format your hard drive by going into ms-dos and typing: format c: and that will kill everything and you can start fresh

Yeah, XP is pretty damn buggy. I hated windows 2000 too. Personally if I had a choice I woulda stuck with 95 or 98. Those are probably the least screwy.

Re:Quick computer question....

1995 with all the patches and stuff ran like a charm.. too bad none of the new programs support it :-\

The only operating system I ever had not crash on me was DOS. ::) Maybe we should resort back to that.. haha

Re:Quick computer question....

Well, Mr.Smarty pants, when you install the CD it says it can't write over the old operating system. Then is shuts down. It already has Windows98 and Windows 2000 on it, but the god damn thing is full of viruses. I'm going to try that formatc: thing.....

Ok, the format thing didn't work. It asked for some sort of code, which I'm sure I don't have. Any other options? :-\

Re:Quick computer question....

cd key? LOL

---- using winxp utilities.. i pop in my old school ghetto windows 98 startup disc to get rid of old versions off the hard drive. for some reason i've found that if you try to install windows over older versions, sometimes it fucks up the install and leaves old ---- on the hard drive and other weird things..

Dr.Boost 09-09-2004 09:11 PM

Re:Quick computer question....

I have no CD key. I just want to completely delete everything off this piece of ---- and put a nice clean version of XP on it. I think buying a new hard drive would make this really easy....

Re:Quick computer question....

You're using a Dell right? Are you trying this with the restore disk that it came with, or do you actually have a full XP install CD?

Dr.Boost 09-09-2004 10:09 PM

Re:Quick computer question....

I have the original XP install CD that came with it, but some dipshit put Windows 2000 AND Windows 98 on it and I don't have the key codes for either of them. The ------- thing is so full of viruses it's rediculous. >:(

EDIT: Yeah, it's a Dell laptop.

So, it has two partitions you're saying?

Dr.Boost 09-09-2004 10:38 PM

Re:Quick computer question....

If a partition is an operating system, then yes. ??? The little computer knowledge I have says that is a bad idea, but the "compuer guy" thought it was a good one. ::)

Re:Quick computer question....

make your self a boot disk from the control panel, then boot off of it. It should take you to a C prompt. Type "Format C:"

Dr.Boost 09-09-2004 11:15 PM

Re:Quick computer question....

Yeah, that whole "Format C:" thing isn't working. It asks me for a key I don't have. :-\

Re:Quick computer question....

---- I don't know. I'm just trying to erase the ---- that's on it. It won't let me put XP on it while this other bullshit is on it and it won't let me erase the bullshit.

Re:Quick computer question....

Restart the computer and before you operating system boots go into your bios and select the cdrom drive to be the primary boot device. Then restart and it will boot from the cd and never access the hard drive and you can do it from there. The reason you cant format it is because you are running everything off the c drive so its like suicide to itself if you format while using it. Just restart after you change the boot order. Its easy from there.

Dr.Boost 09-09-2004 11:21 PM

Re:Quick computer question....

Will that erase the other ---- that's on it? I don't want that virus infected ---- left on it.
