Questions on the rebuild that I'm going to do next week... You saw the damage!

Well I'm guessing I can get away with a hone and be OK to rebuild... that is going to be determined next week.

My real question is, If I went and bought a set of scat rods / vitara pistons and slapped them together... and a new set of bearings -- 1) how do I decide which bearings to go with? OEM, aftermarket, sizes, etc?

and 2) DO I have to have the crank polished? There are no spun bearings, so would it be safe to assume that the crank is OK to just be re-installed if the new bearing sizes are properly chosen? I'm trying to get out of this as cheaply as possible, as I'm kind of broke.

My father is all about slapping 1 used OEM piston in there, ---- checking clearances, new rings, and go. I feel like this is going to result in overly high compression in that cylinder as well a spun rod bearing on that rod down the line. I think though cheap, it is too much of a risk.

What I want to do is get the scats / vitaras, hone it, deck the head, put new bearings but don't do anything to the crank, bolt it all together, new rings in all 4 cyls obviously, and call it a day. I feel like the extra money in these forged rods is good insurance for my block down the line... and two rebuilds will cost almost as much as doing this right in the first place.

What do you all think? Is there more to a rebuild then I am considering?

To break it down: 100$ for arps, 20$ or so for the used stock ----, slap it in, taking some major risks. Worth it?

or: scat rods, 290$, vitaras 123$, 100$ for arps, 35 for hg, 20 for IM gasket, and 50$ for misc ----.

Did I miss anything, or is this pretty much accurate?

yea, you should have a machine shop check the crank and use oem bearings

---- those vitara pistons. use your stock pistons if you cant afford to buy some aftermarket forged pistons. best thing you could do is get pistons and rods now while it is all apart, save yourself the hassle and unhappiness.

what motor is this for? if its a d series your gonn have to notch the block for those rods, on my d16a6 the scat rods hit the bottom of the cylinder walls (which is expected) as well as the main girrdle webbing.

My Crowers don't hit anything. :P You get what you pay for. ;)

Are you keeping this car? Is it going to see more boost? I don't see how putting forged rods with cast pistons is a good idea, but whatever floats your boat. :-\ Think about it, your stock cast pistons took a ---- before the stock cast rods. Why replace the rods with beefy replacements when the pistons are what gave out. Forged pistons or nothing. You're going to be in the same situation you're in now. :-\

SO nobody beleives any of the ---- from the 13 page thread on HT? And all DSMs are cast from the factory... etc etc. Some castings are just better than others is what I thought.

I really don't know. But I was planning on putting my 3bar and some more boost with the new setup.

You have crowers in your A6 and you didn't have to notch the block?
