Default question on civic redline limit

ok i realized that my ex redline is actually past 7k rpms. I tested it out and it seems it actually redlines at 73k rpm. Why did honda make it at 7k when its actually at 73k?
And since i actually go past the 7k is it possibly hurting my engine when i shift past that mark? Just curious if any other cars are like this and if its hurting my engine

Your fuel cut is at 7300 or around there, the redline on those is like 7200, from what I have seen. No it doesn't hurt it but the stock cam doesn't make power up there if you're talking about NA, the fuel cut is there for a reason, so you can't hurt your car.

yeah, you're not making power up there, i notice a lot more wheel spin when i shift right before redline as opposed to right after red line (going in to second anyways, they don't spin into third yet )

yeah i notice that too. I jerk more when i shift before the 7k prior to shifting after. Another thing i notice is i usually grind gears from shifting from 1-2 gear when i shift past 7

That is because there is a lot of power going through the transmission that high and it is spinning really fast. Shift slow or you'll be needing new synchros.

After I went OBD1 and chipped the P28 on my 97 EX it reved to 9,000 rpms. Of course I had no power way up there and only took it that high a few times

I would not take it that high just because most of the time your power is actually dropping at high rpm's

well i know that i reach my max horsepower is at 6600 rpm so when is the drop of point you think at 7k then? I usually shift before 7k put just recently been testing out the rev limit

Not aimed anyone here... But in general most people are confused about what the redline means or why engines have a redline. The redline is usually the max rpm that the car is volumetrically efficient till. Thats why crx hf's redline at 5k with the tiny ports they have. You begin to lose max hp after you pass the redline so it is worthless to shift beyond that point in most cases. However it is not dangerous to go beyond this redline point with your civic. However you should not make a habit of it.

Not saying your wrong. And I know what your saying but it
actually depends on your car and gear ratios. If your car doesn't make any good power until 5k rpms and you shift at say 6800, then your next gear may fall down in the 4k's where you make hardly any power. now if you would have taken the car to say 7200, your power may fall off a little but you then are going into the next gear at a higher rpm where you make more power. It's all about staying in the power band. I am not saying your wrong just wanted to share.
