That's an old version then, same as mine, and mine works so, I dont know. Clean it out and what not, sounds like it is just getting old and something is worn out.

If I'm not mistaken, there's a problem with a plastic gear inside the PS2. There's a writeup out there, where you have to take it apart and move the gear either clockwise or counterclockwise in order for it to read a ps1 game. I'll talk to my buddy about it, I know he did it a few times.

i took it apart thouroghly cleaned it about 6-8 months ago. i took off the top cover today and it still looked pretty damn clean in there.

after doing some searching i found that sometimes you need to adjust the laser. but i couldn't find a write up on how to do it :-\

yea my roomate did that and accidently cut the wireband that connects to the lazer :'(

Re: PS2 wont play PS1 games

be careful. this is a common problem with the older big ps2's. they jus have a hard time reading the blue bottom ps2 games and any ps1 game, but it'll play any dvd rom ps2 game or dvd... either get it super cleaned or buy another one. dont take it apart cuz i did that with mine and i broke the bracket for the wire that goes the laser n had to buy a new anyway.

from Special Ed's link

I also do not recommend placing the PS2 on its side once you have fixed it. Although Sony says they recommend it in the owner manual, I have since seen internal Sony documents retracting the statement and attributing many malfunctions to storing and operating the unit on its side. Keep it flat at all times.

i think that was what caused this. a few months ago i rearranged my entertainment center so i could put my bird cage in there and i put the console on its side. ------- Sony, most of my bigger $$ electronics are Sony and this is the only one i have had a problem with :-\
