Post your resume(cool points if you do)

I'm going to a local VW dealership and put down an app, so I was wondering what everyone else's resumes looked like. I'm 19 and the only work experience that i have is working at Subway as a cashier and the Sears that Ii'm working at part time as a immigrant slave. So busts out with any tips, and some resumes would be nice :X

You don't need a resume. Just make like Obie Trice and show them your hairy nuts. If they like what they see, you get the job. They don't, you get jailed.

i did the same thing you are about to. i started at a local VW dealer when i was 19, before i turned 21 i was making $36k/yr.
just bust your ass when you are doing the grunt work and you will be rewarded. try to get into the parts dept, once you are in at a dealer you can get a job at any other dealer for the rest of your life.

I 'd like to think that i'm pretty much in but i would like to show that extra step by making a resume. I know 2 of the Certified mechanics in the backshop and some young buck got fired for some reason or another. I am only lost in what an automotive resume should look like. Should i list the equipment i can use?

Not looking too much as to the future of the job, I'm taking it as I need to get a better job than fag sears and their shitty pay/destruction of all motivation.

MikeJ-2009 01-09-2006 05:44 PM

Re: Post your resume(cool points if you do)

I'm not sure I'd bust out the resume. If you know two of the mechanics, have them put the word in and more than likely if the "boss" is interested he'll say "have him call me". If they put the word in and you don't hear anything, than put a resume in and call afterwards.

Your work history doesn't support anything that will happen at the dealership, so I would bust ass to get an interview and during it let your general abilities shine. (Knowledge of cars, safety, good communication, ect..)

A resume with Subway on it at a car dealership probably wouldn't help the cause.

yea but showing he can work reliably will always help. im working on a new resume as we speak for a job once i graduate. just list the things you know how to do with cars, where you went to high school, jobs, and list some references...if you actually want to see my resume let me know ill post it up so you can see the format i used

Re: Post your resume(cool points if you do)

what position are you trying to get??? if you dont have any dealer experience or some sort of real school, you dont stand a chance of becoming a tech without going through a LOT of bullshit.

i thought the same thing about werking at the dealer, just getting a job and thats it. but after i werked part time for a while i saw the money that was there, i asked my manager what i could do to make more money and he put me in the parts dept.

i started out making $8.50/hr working 4hrs per day in Oct 02, by June 03 i was working full time making $36k/yr. i had ZERO auto experience (other than my own cars) i just went to werk and made sure everythign i did was better than the guy next to me.

Yes, the application will ask about previous employement and how long he worked there. That will show the reliability. Your resume should show some type of history in the field you're applying for. Subway and Sears don't call for a resume IMO.

Umm if you are applying for a real job you should have a resume, not just say I know those two guys over there

turning in a template resume wont get u past the interview guarenteed. i have my resume.. i think ittl look fucked up if i post it here...
ok.. just fixed it up a little so it looks a tad bit better.. basically.. like my engineering 101 teacher told us.
all your trying to do in a resume is sell yourself.. thats all.. its that simple.. no matter what u do.. u cant LIE.
and u HAVE to have contact info for all the jobs u held.. if u dont.. DO NOT write refrences upon request...
i deleted the refrences i had in here..

resumes for someone out of college should only be ONE page long.. unless u got any real expieriece.. u should always keep it to one page.
they only look at education and expierience.. they dont pay attention to all that other crap.. i had all my refrences called up :l
affirmative action got the best of me >:(

its understandable that he has an ailment man.. no employer will hold that against him..

link.. my resume was used to apply for an engineering job..

in my first resume i had stuff in there like hobbies.. and cars.. and other filler crap.. but now since i have expierience i dont need it in there..

just list that you have the know how to do it. honestly. if i were you i would just talk to the manager.. or whomever it is there.. dress professional and all and get it over with.. ur still in highschool man.. trust me.. they wont expect u to have a resume.. man.. ask for an internship man. or get something through your schools votec! stay after school with a councelor and she would be more than happy to advise you bro.. she might even help you put together a resume..

find a local shop.. and get started there.. even if its an autobody shop.. anything..

best advice yet :y

Your not going to jump right into being a tech when your still in high school and can probably only work part-time. I would just go there and tell them your getting ready to go to school for autotech and that you are interested in an internship, even if its handing guys tools, cleaning tools, washing cars whatever. You will have your foot in the door.

who says a template resume wont get you past an interview? i went through 3 interview at my most recent job with a template resume. whats not good is when you list that you've had 3 jobs within 6 months or so, that shows that you cant hold a job for a long period of time. ;)

cronological resume is the way to go, I am now getting out of the Army I have 2 months to go, and plan to still work for the army when I am out, they have programs that you just list your resume and they will call you and offer you jobs. or if you see one you like you email your resume to them. that resume I posted up top already got me 4 job offers, 2 of them in kuwait for 80k for six months, and one in Iraq, the other one is in Germany crushing cars at a junk yard, I plan to accept this one.

craigslist is also a cool place to look for jobs.. employers on there always post ---- like that..

rudeboy is right. online and email is also the new way to go.. make sure your attached resumes are in doc. or rtf (prefferibly) format..
cause the employer wont be trying to convert ur resume from wdp or corel or some other bullshit to open it. its so easy to delete an email ;)

good job sites ive posted on before.

www.monster.com
www.hotjobs.yahoo.com

ive never posted by resume on craigslist.. but i browsed through the help wanted section..

Re: Post your resume(cool points if you do)

I've been told you want to use "key" words on a resume. Things that are like "collaberated, created, developed" other bullshit like that. I'm not sure how effective mine is, but it's gotten positive comments on interviews I've been to and I think it helped me get an internship that I'll be starting next summer. The format goes:

Contact Info

Education <--- grades, graduation date, school attended.

Skills/Qualifications <--- Things I've picked up that are related to my major; software, machine shop tools, etc.

Activities <--- any projects you are working on that aren't things that anyone can or wants to do. Your car would be a good example. On mine, I have this racecar project and this student org. that I'm part of.

Employment <--- I put employment last because I've only had one real job and it was a bullshit Sears job. I commented on the duties I had to perform and what I learned about it.

A couple good tips I've picked up from some people are that you want your resume to have just enough information to spark up a conversation but not your life story. You also want to tailor it to the type of work you might be doing, to show that your capable of doing the job.

As for the interview, be ready for behavioral questions (describe a time when you didn't get along with a team member; when did you feel dissatisfied with something; how would you react to a problem with short notice, etc.). Have stories/situations with positive endings to answer these questions with. The way I see it, from your resume or whatever, they might deem you technically qualified, but want to check your attitude with an interview. Of all the interviews I've been to in the past year, 90% of the questions were behavioral...

Good Luck!
