Possible future project

I was kickin around some ideas in my head today and I came up with one i think has some merit. I am thinkin about dropping an RB20DET into a 280ZX. I love the original Z-car styling. The RB20DET should be pretty close in weightand size to the Z's inline 6 but make more power with a few mild mods and be easier to live with.

Why RB20DET instead of SR20DET, RB25DET or RB26DETT? A: because of money. SR20's, RB25's and 26's are starting to get pricey. I've seen R32 front clips for less than 3 grand. I also love the sound of an inline-6 at full song.

This project would be to build a quick, fun street car using an old school chassis thats relatively easy to find. This won't be a mega-horsepower track car. I want something in the low 13-second 1/4 mile area. That should let me hold my own against about anything on the street.

I'm still just brainstorming and researching at this point. Any comments, ideas, etc. are welcome.

sounds cool but low 13s on the street and you will get eaten up by a good amount of cars, depending what is around where u live, i know where i live you would get spanked routinely

good idea tho
i love the old zs too

My buddy just put an RB25 in a 240 and ran a 12.8 with no mods at all.

Because the RB-series motors will bolt into the old Z car chassis using engine mounts from a JDM Z31 that had an RB in it from the factory. I was considering the KA but decided against it because I really wanted to put an inline-6 in it.

After checking around the difference in price between the older RB25(250hp) and the RB20 arent that much. I'll prolly go with the RB25. With bolt-ons I should be in the 12's if the rearend doesn't explode.

If you don't mind could you ask him where he bought his swap and how much he paid.

Some links I found for anyone who's interested:

I prefer the 240/260 Z models, the 280Z / ZX cars just have a little too much factory bling on them. A clean 240 is a sweet smooth loooking car...

that'll be one hell of a machine... I vote RB25... I should do one of those for my next racecar...
