Porting / Poloshing heads
 

Guys.......

Im thinking about porting / poloshing my heas for my car.

However Iam not sure on what I need to do

What equimpent will I require ?

any pics or info would be helpful.

I have always used a dremel to polish anything....and im sure a die grinder would work to. dremel makes a good polishing kit, its like 10bucks at wal-mart. use that. if you want to port, a drill and a car-bide bit will do the trick. the bit you can get at home-depot or lowes or any place like that for about 10 bucks as well...

you wont be drilling any bits out. you put the bit into the drill. using a drill for porting is alot easier than a dremel tool. make sure you have a way to measure so you can port match the intake mani to the intake ports and the exhaust ports to the header.

-a dremel tool is perfect for polishing though.

which side do u port and polish ?
is it the intake side ? or the exaust side ?

the pictures you have ..
is it
1 before and the other one after ?

did you notice any diffrance ?

I personally did both sides. And then I did both manifolds with the same process. I'm actually headed down to my garage here in a few minutes I'll come up with a parts list of what I used. I'll try and take a picture of them also. No before pic sorry. I was so pissed at myself for that and now I take so many pictures its crazy. You won't really be able to tell the difference. But the difference is there. Remember the point is that every little bit helps. Chances are that ricer beside you doesn't have it done.

robert has a real good idea/write-up of how to do it. I ported and polished a nissan head for a 200sx. you want to see pics, go to www.jgenginedynamics.com these prices are really good and about what you are gonna pay anywhere you go. while your at the site, make sure you check out the vids(not 56k compatable)

Im gonna add to what robert said. you can open it up a little more than the gasket, you just have to trim the gasket. the best way, is get a calabrating tool, one that measures down to the 1000's of an inch, and make sure that you match the intake mani to the intake side of the head, and same with the exhaust. there is a very good write up here...

this is a little over-kill but you get the point. you asked about materials, go to walmart and get a dremel cleaning/polishing kit. its in the tool section. its about 10bucks. also, you will wanna get a carbide bit. really you cant screw up a polish job, but you can screw up a port job, if you take it to big, and take to much off of the walls. just measure alot, and match the intake side together, and the exhaust side together.

and yeah, what robert said, its a huge time consumer. make a all day event with a dremel tool. my sugestion, get another head to port, and do a swap with them.
