Pics of my custom setup

You all don't know me, I don't believe I've ever posted before, but I troll around on the forums a bit. I'm a lot more known on the JBO (http://www.j-body.org), but since this site was a bit of a help during my setup, I figured I'd post the results here as well.

My car is a 2000 Chevy Cavalier Z24, 2.4L, auto tranny (swapping to 5 speed soon). 150hp/155tq stock (flywheel).

Here's what my setup consists of:
  • Secret Cams (2.3L Intake/Exhaust) (Not Installed)
  • Cometic .074 Boost Headgasket (Not Installed)
  • Prothane Upper Engine Mount
  • Prothane Lower Engine Mount
  • NGK TR6 #4177
  • 2.3 HO Intake Manifold
  • Phenolic Intake Manifold Spacer/Adapter
  • T3 Turbo Exhaust Manifold
  • T3 Super 60 Turbo
  • 30x6x3 Johnny Racecar Intercooler
  • TurboXS RFL Blow Off Valve
  • 2.5" Downpipe
  • A'Pexi SAFC-2 Version 2 (Black)
  • Greddy Profec B Spec 2 Electronic Boost Controller
  • 30lb/hr Ford Red Top Injectors
  • Cartech BEGI 2025 Adjustable FMU
  • Accel Adjustable FPR 74565
  • AEM UEGO Wideband Gauge
  • Autometer Ultralite Boost Gauge
  • Autometer SportComp Fuel 1.5" Pressure Gauge
  • GlowShift Tinted Oil Pressure
  • GlowShift Tinted Oil Temperature
  • GlowShift Tinted Voltmeter
  • 2.5" Mandrel Bent Charge Piping
  • 1/4" ID Braided SS Oil Feed
  • 5/8" ID Oil Return
  • Mushroom Foam Air Filter
  • Felpro Intake Gasket
  • Felpro Exhaust Gasket
  • Felpro Oil Pan Gasket
  • Enough brass fittings to plumb a house
  • Magnaflow 40 2.5" Single in - dual 2.25" out muffler
  • 2.5" Catco High flow cat
  • 2.5" Flex pipe
  • Silicone hose connectors
  • T-Bolt Clamps
  • Steel T3 Gaskets
  • Grade 9 Turbo studs and nuts
  • Relocated Battery with box
  • 4 Gauge Battery Cable

I put a lot of work into the design of the kit. The goal was to have something where the charge pipes could not be seen. Originally I wanted a sleeper, unable to tell that it was a turbo vehicle at all, but recently thats changed since I came across an incredible deal on a urethane body kit that nobody makes anymore. So anyway, here are some of the install pictures. They are a bit blurry, the camera sucked, but you get the idea:

And now some clearer pictures from when I brought it home. Install was done in a friends garage about 200 miles away.

A bit of a review of the performance:
Turbo is set at 5psi, I'm seeing spikes up to 7. From a standstill I have absolutely no traction. Even with brand new tires, at 35mph if I stomp on it, the tires break loose and don't grab again until I'm doing 45 or so. My A/F's are in the 10's or richer while in boost (I have a lot of tuning to do). I will be turning the boost up to 8 or 9 PSI consistantly, and if I change my injectors out to brown tops I may go all the way up to 10 or 12 PSI for racing, but keep it around 8 on the street.

Products Review:

T3 Super 60 From Andre's Turbos (Ebay)
The first one blew up, made boost once then the thrust bearings went out and the compressor started contacting the housing. The turbo was promptly sent out just prior to thanksgiving, and arrived at his shop a couple days later. I did not recieve the replacement turbo until just before christmas. While I am satisfied with the replacement, him saying he shipped it out multiple times was an utter lie. He'd say he had shipped it out a couple days ago, but when I finally threatened him with legal action, it was shipped 2 days later. The replacement turbo is working well so far. The turbo is almost perfectly sized for the 2.4L engine and is good to get it into the high 12's as proven by other members of the JBO (Kane5567 or something). Extremely fast spool and incredible power.

Cartech Adjustable FMU
I love this thing, worth twice its price and its wieght in gold (and its heavy). I got it for a steal on ebay for $180 brand new.

TurboXS RFL Blow Off Valve
Was a poor choice for the sleeper look, it is LOUD. Even when I'm just cruising not in boost it lets out a noise that is equivalent to a horror movie that features the sand man where the bad noise is the shhhhhhhh. It screams bloody hell and you can't miss this thing. Definately gets you noticed when you let it blow off. I do like it so far, but I'm kinda fearing doing a leak down test on my charge pipes with it. I hear it leaks boost. I'll have to add some washers to it so that it doesn't chatter so much, but so far I'm relatively happy with it.

AEM 7in1 Wideband
I only got the 7in1 because I found a great deal on ebay, unless you can't find the specific style you want, it really isn't worth the extra $100 retail. I do like its features though, but it wouldn't satisfy the stock ECU with its narrow band emulation (which is why you see 2 O2 sensors in my downpipe). It seems to be accurate, and I don't have many complaints so far. The LED's around the edge seem to work on and off. Sometimes the lower half doesn't work, most of the time it does. I haven't been able to narrow down what the issues with it are yet, but the center display has always worked.

Johnny Racecar Intercooler
Can't beat it, especially for the price. It looks great and performs well, very happy with it. http://www.johnnyracecar.com

Thats about all I have so far, feel free to ask questions!

FMU, Auto, and the fact that it's a J body = crap.

Otherwise nice setup. I'm not a big fan of cavaliers but atleast you made something halfway decent out of it.

Auto = 8 (
J body style = 8 (
FMU = 8 (

You liking it = 8 )
Ecotec = 8 )

Somebody else had a boosted Cavi on here.

The Ecotec is a potential monster, it just seems its lacking streetable support(wrather than high end drag racing), but that's changing.

Good work. Good write up. And I completely agree with the XS Power BOV. My friend has one on his MR2 and its equivilent to throwing a bucket of water at the ground every time he shifts. Even under 5 psi... sucks.

Its not an eco ;) The Eco is the 2.2L that wasn't available in the J's until late 2002, mine is a 2000 2.4L LD9 (read NOT a quad 4).

Not sure why nobody likes the FMU, I don't have any available ECU tuning like the honda guys, so I need something to increase fuel relative to boost. HP Tuners is supposed to come out with something relatively soon, so as soon as I get that, the FMU goes.

To each there own on the J-body or Honda. I don't personally like the Honda's style, but I do appreciate the amount of work that goes into setups like this, regardless of the car. You guys have a lot more aftermarket support than we do, so it takes a bit more customization to get some things meant for other applications to work.

NOT ECOTEC? BULLSHIT FUC YOU ---- THIS FUCLKASJLDSJGFlSDJGLJKSDG

Just kidding. Nice to see that you worked with what you had.

FMU's are looked down upon due to the detonation they cannot prevent at high RMP's and boost levels.

Lucky enough then, my cavalier can only rev to 6500 RPM :) Its not a high revving honda ;)

Re: Pics of my custom setup

lol they can stop detonation at high rpm levels if they provide enough fuel...

ditch the FMU and run either emanage, or stick with the AFC.

as others have said, they dont save your motor, they will kill it faster.

maybe look into a OBD1 conversion and run a older ecu with a custom eprom for your application.

there is also a chance if you are running low enough boost and a moderately sized injector, the ecu might be able to handle it.

Problem with the SAFC is that you can't tune it in boost, it can't add any more fuel than 100% voltage on the MAP sensor, and the MAP sensor maxes out as soon as you hit boost. We can't use 2 bar map sensors, so that kinda screws me. I could get the GM reflash and the 2 bar map sensor, then tune with the SAFC, but I'm holding out for HPT to come out with thier software.

So far the ECU has been pretty happy with the 320cc injectors. The A/F's during cruising and idle are respectable, so I think I'm going to try putting in the 370's and see how it likes it. Either way the current FMU/SAFC setup isn't staying, they are both going to get replaced with the HPT software if they ever get off thier asses and get what they promise on the market.

Nice pics and setup.
I can only dream of actually making more than 100ft-lbs of TQ <6000rpm in my Honda.

if you want the reflash let me know, i have the GM blower and the part number for the reflash and the 4 digit access code. im running a SDS EM4F so i have no use for the stock ecu or reflash.

robogeek and the boys at HPT are working hard, but it will be a while before that happens.

good luck with the project.f

you will seriously need a bigger turbo homey, that little super 60, wouldnt even hold up on my last B16 which is a 1.6 so i know it has to be strugglin on a 2.4

look into like an sc34 or 44

good job on the fab work
