Pics of JHill's Road Race CRX (TUNED!)

Me and Jim finally got his Crx tuned with the AEM EMS, he’s going to be doing a road race event Sat at Mission Raceway in BC. He's just about done with his car, so I took a few pics today, (the car looks really nice guys!)

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/jim/89dx.jpg

Ahh yes, the nice bright yellow, sporting his new 15in wheels, and new toyo rubber.

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/jim/rear.jpg

Jim, took off a few of his stickers, but still sports the ANGEL sticker I put on for him ;)

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/jim/cage1.jpg

Jim’s cage is all done, and looks really nice! He painted the entire inside of the car "Battleship Grey"

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/jim/cage2.jpg

Had to gut the inside of the LH door to get the cage to clear.

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/jim/doorpan.jpg

Sexy door panel, but if you look close you can see ......? ;)

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/jim/inside.jpg

Inside is real clean, Jim's still sporting that stock shifter and his homemade shift knob, hahahha :P

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/jim/riley1.jpg

With all the excitement in the driveway, Riley (Jim’s son) had to come check out what was going on, I strapped him in the 5pt Harness, :)

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/jim/riley2.jpg

How does Dads car sound Riley? "BAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Bwahhhhhhh" Jim just got new exhaust that sounds real nice, but resonates the ---- out of the car.

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/jim/tune1.jpg

Since Jim is racing in a week, we had to do the old fashion way of tuning, (on the street) But we were able to use his Wideband O2 setup for data logging.

https://www.homemadeturbo.com/jim/tune2.jpg

After a few tries, we started to figure out how to adjust the AEM setup, it was a bit tricky, and overwhelming, since it’s so damn configurable. But we finally got the Air/Fuel set at 12.0-12.5 @ WOT. You should see the damn manual for this thing, lol :o

Why didn’t we use the AUTOTUNE function? Well Jim didn’t want to upgrade the firmware version of the ECU this close to his race, just incase we had a problem with updating it. Anyways, wish him luck at his first race!

I will more than likely be their taking pictures, and crewing for him.

Thanks guys, and thanks to Jeff for coming down to help tune the ECU. It took a while to get things to the point where we could make changes and see results, but once we got there it was nice and quick.

5 more days for the first race.

Simply beautiful. I envy your work.
Which wideband?

Saw on HT, where you can datalog raw knock sensor output w/ the EMS. You try it yet? Wish Hondata did that.

Your sons got the future motorhead grinn. :D

i love them kosei rims! too bad they don't make 5-lug versions, i think?

nice roll cage though, my friend and i are going build a CRX ourselves and will need a roll cage = shooting for 11.99s, and the crx setup looks really nice.

its spronsers and light weight rims w/ a yellow STOCK body, whats so ricey? because it doesnt look ass stock with the black body panels and pizza pan looking rims?

So, to have a "nice" car you have to have a turbo in a rusty white CRX? grow up

The AEM has so many damn ouputs, I did see some knock sensor ouput's, I wasnt really paying attention to them. I would really like to tune a Boosted app with this setup :)

Jim's mods are in his signature..

and Crippled Crippled Giraffe thats your first warning... :P

Uh oh, baby didn't get his juice box? I like the car, especially the attention to detail on the cage.

Im just wondering, how much did it cost to build that car. Thats one sweet ride, fill us in on the making of that beast.

Sweet ! Very nice. I watched the old video of him racing that turbo s2000 on the track.. I think he ran a 13.7 or something, correct? B16 all motor.

There aint nothin' wrong with that car :)

Whoah, turbo S2000 only ran a 13.7? Considering the car puts out nearly 400hp, I thought it would at least run mid 12's!

JHill 04-22-2003 09:37 AM

Re:Pics of JHill's Road Race CRX (TUNED!)

Yeah, it ran 13.7 at Pacific Raceways in the video. That was about the time we started into the road race thing, when the S2000 guy got me to go to an event with him. So we started the conversion of the car into a road racer.

It is prepped for Honda Challenge H1 (Hybrid class), and ICSCC SPU (super production/under 2 liter/Turbos allowed too)/ITE (Improved Touring). All of these classes allow some sort of engine swap.

Preparation costs? It was pricey, but I can list out what I remember.

$1000 Wheels (2 sets)
$2100 Tires (consumable, will use several sets a year)
$480 Tokico Illumina shocks
$350 Ground Control coilovers w/race springs 500f/700r
$130 Energy Suspension Bushings
$230 Suspension Techniques swaybars
$170 Adjustable Ball Joints

$450 Momo FIA race seat
$190 Sparco SFI 5 point Harness
$180 Sparco 383 steering wheel
$57 Momo Hub
$140 Quick release adapter
$50 Window Net/hardware
$30 Fuel sample port
$30 10bc Fire extinguisher
$70 Exhaust system
$50 Master Switch
$270 Transponder
$800 Roll Cage
$100 Professional Welding services
$6 1 Qt Can of Grey Rustoleum to paint cage with a brush.
Free Paint job by Sponsor Dougs Auto!! Thanks Doug.

$6883 total

I have about 200 hours of work into this project as well (that is a very conservative estimate, my wife would triple that figure!)

I think that is it. It doesn't have the price of the car or engine or ECU in there. Anyone could do all of this to a stock CRX Si and run very competitively in ITA. I started with the wrong car really. Hybrid road racing is still pretty small unless you live somewhere that Honda Challenge runs (East Coast or California, and starting up in the Midwest somewhere too).

Really though, I can't think of a funner way to get rid of money.

3 days to the first race...

Jim

That S2000 is supercharged and has ~300 RWHP. The thing with that car is traction on the launch, you might notice how much of a jump the CRX gets on him in the 60'. The other thing about the video that you can't see is that he lets off as he passes me and is giving me the bird with both hands as he is going by me! :o

Supercharged S2000, and its not 400hp, lol maybe like 330 or so, but thats it. As you can see with the trap speed he got, its an easy 12 sec car. Traction dude, he was rolling on Fixie 3 piece 18's. Plus Ray is a Road racer not a dragger ;)

Re:Pics of JHill's Road Race CRX (TUNED!)

supercharged S2000 = 360hp

Re:Pics of JHill's Road Race CRX (TUNED!)

Thats like saying Turbo Honda 1.6l SOHC is 200hp

Everyone is different dude.. lol ::)

Example, some people were dynoing with that Vortech supercharger kit on the 99-00si and wasnt hitting near the HP levels Vortech claimed.. factors
