PC DIED! Wont Reboot, Wont Startup, Wont Reformat $5 REWARD
 

Hey guys
My computer died yesterday, just died. I tried many times to just reboot and it comes to a screen that gives me these options, start in safe mode, start in safe mode with cache, some other safe mode and a start with ur last known good setting.

It wont let me do a single one of them, I push enter on any of them and it reads like 50 lines of code and it goes to a blue screen that just says windows isnt working and what to do (the options given above, none work) is says the ERROR is

BOOT_VOLUME something, cant remember exactly but something about boot volume

Now I really just my old pc back to get my files and pictures of my girl and such but I cant get it.

Ive tried rebooting with a windows xp reformat disk in the drive and it just doesnt work, does nothing, doesnt read it before the blue screen comes a driving and making me scream

is it set to boot from cd? when u turn on ur pc. keep hitting f8 till that screen comes up. and set it to boot from cd.
then restart it.

sounds to me like u got a corrupt windows system. you should be able to do it. but if u cant. and u dont care bout ur files. just connect ther hard drive to another computer not as the primary. but as the slave. and reformat it through

start > control panel > administrative tools > computer management.

then select storage. and reformat

sounds to me like a hardware problem. Make sure all of your fans are spinning!

download knoppix. Its a linux distro where you can run directly off the CD. Make sure your bios is set up so you can boot of cds. Then knoppix should automaticly mount the NTFS partition for read only. Get the files you need and burn them onto cd's. fdisk the whole drive using knoppix.

commandline:

fdisk -l (list all drives and partions)
fdisk (the hard drive name stated in fdisk -l)
fdisk -d (delete all the partions)

I think thats the fdisk commands computers suck.

winxp diskettes dont work\
put in the winxp cd and load the setup program when ur computer boots


if it doesnt prompt you for the cd start go in the bios and select the cd as the first bootable device

I dont get how to start it from a cd, dont know what bios are, im not great with pcs, just general ----. Ive got a legit xp disk though, just that dam blue screen comes up with every option

when the screen comes up. everything is pretty straighforward and easy to figure out. its in the boot settings.

I think I tried that though, definetely tried it, goes to the option screen and nothing works

Why don't you just pull the hard drive and connect it to your working computer? You don't need to boot from it to retrieve files. That's by far the easiest thing to do.

I was told on HT just now to hold the DEL key on startup and somehow switch the bios to start from cd first

anyone have ideas on this? opinions?

I really want my files but dont care that much, there pictures of old girlfriends that I have in other places anyways

If you want to save the files put the hd in an other comp and copy them. but yeah try hitting del on start up and what they said, then you have to put the windows disk in.

and any hmt member worth his weight in nut hair posts pics of their chicks. especially their exes because tey can't get mad, let alone find out

when you first turn it on, press del to go into the bios. search for boot sequence, and put CD ROM at the top of the list.

make sure the cd is in the drive, if its a legit xp disk it'll boot of the disk into Windows setup.

format the disk in windows setup, and make a NTFS partition, and install windows again.

^^^ easiest thing to do by far, but sounds like a hardware issue so if your HD died you're screwed. When you hook the HD up to the other PC you can easily transfer files from one PC to another. It'll pick up the other HD as another drive.

Or when the blue screen comes up you can look up the error code on MS's website. Possibly it could be something as easy as reinstalling drivers. You never know. If you don't have the option to pull the HD and put it in another PC try to get a hold of ERD Commander or Mini PE, by far the best tools cd's you can get. WIth those you can boot to the cd and run its OS from the CD and RAM.

If you have no idea what i'm talking about you're fucked and you'll need a reformat and possibly some new hardware.

yep, but dont even reformat it. just install over the current version. and if that doesnt work. then reformat it. but if you dont reformat it and install over hte current version then you will save all of your files.

easy solution may not be the cheapest

throw the computer out the window
go on dell.com or w/e computer comapny you like
buy a new one ;)

busted one is a pentium celeron, 733mhz, 512 ram, crappy video card, older cd burner

New unit with 19" upgrade and all in one printer/scan/copy was $1500 canadian
