good luck on "not looking dumb"

but if you want to be dvd player savvy, you need one that can do the following:

-Play DVD/DVDr/DVDrw (there are some more formats, but that's the basic)
-Play VCD/SVCD (super VCD) (that ---- is a must for home burning
-Play MP3 files (not necessary but cool to have)
-Play CDR/CDRW (make sure all media is welcome)
-Multi Region capable (nice to have, but not a must - means you can play low budget asian rip off movies and ---- like that.. normal dvd players are set to US region coding)

There are many other options out there like Divx movies, photo cd ----, and whatever else I can't remember.. you basicly need what I listed. Sorry I was kinda late getting to this post, been busy. If I think of anything else, I will add.

BTW - no way you will have to spend over $100 for a dvd(rw)/svcd/vcd/mp3 media playing machine. What is your budget anyways, I could ask my brother, he used to sell electronics and likes the feeling of being needed by random strangers for purchasing advice.
