painting my car..questions about painting and paint code help.

First off, I'm trying to decide between doing a single stage and a base-clear. I like the idea of single stage because I'm lazy and i don't want a glass like shine. Any reasons why I shouldn't do it.

And now I've given up on trying to find an olive green so i've decided on a khaki instead...anyone know what this paint is? I've been told that it was on some 98-00 nissan frontier std's but I can't find an example of it or the code for it.

Buk is gay. How can you think about cars when this is a new issue?!?!? ::)

That car/color is sex. I love beige and olives. I've never seen a frontier that color, let alone that light in color. Maybe you could just get some brown and white and make your own. :-\ Nice color. Do both stages, you're putting in the time just finish it. Prep work is the most time consuming/hardest so just take the time and clear it.

If I ever did a proper paint job I would definitely use clear coat. Even if you don't really want a super shine it will protect your base coat.

The other reason I'm not doing base-clear is because single stage is CHEAP!!!! I finally found the right olive green and from a buddy of mine who runs a body shop he could get me a gallon of it for the low low price of $750/gal.

single stage is easy as ---- and you can make it look like a 2 stage easy. single stage is alo cheaper so if you dont really car then i would get single stage. wat kinda shape is the car in. if your just gonna single stage it all you really need to do is wash it really good and hte wet scuff is with this soap sand mix and take that bitch up ans spray here. just scuff it really good so the paint will stick or you could wet snd it with 600 grit al the way around but that takes atleast 3 hours to do it rite. and scuffing takes me 15 to 20 minutes at work when we do car lot cars. lol. need any help pm me i work at a paint and body shop. also almost for got befor you paint it but after you tape it wipe it down real good with a wax and grease remover i would do that like 2 times just so it doesnt fish eye. like i said wash it real good before you sand it though because if ou sand any oil and ---- into the paint you will see it after you paint it.

Re: painting my car..questions about painting and paint code help.

I've been trying different olives (at 15.00/pint) and so far I've only come up with these that are remotely close....the lighter one's chip was a perfect match to the car I posted above, but turned yellowish once I sprayed it (as you can see), the next one is a mix of the first and a much darker olive green. Neither are what I want and I'm starting to get pissed. :(

I'm pretty sure no car was ever mass produced in olive green. You're gonna have to work w/a source that can mix something up or just keep mixing things and keep track of what your adding.

Re: painting my car..questions about painting and paint code help.

I'm not looking through manufacturer's chips, I'm looking through PPG's "custom colors" chips, they have a chip book of about 250+ greens alone. It's just the issue of finding the right one. :-[ and actually if you go to www.paintscratch.com and search for "olive" in the color name search, a ---- TON of olives come up.

Going to have to custom match or create your own man. The hatch above was also a custom color, no real code incolved, just a custom formula. I also went this route with my Integra but it too was a custom mix.
Attachment 30116

If you can find a good shop to work with that does custom mixes, you can bring in an object of the color you want to mix and they will try and match it to that. The kahki color, maybe bring in a piece of plastic or cloth or something in the exact color you want and they may be able to match to that. Good luck.

whatever you do make sure you have extra since you'll probably never be able to mix the same exact color again

a proper paint shop will have a book you can flip through that have swatches of color samples from various car manufacturers.

750 a gallon is a lot of money. Buddy got a gallon of a custom mix silver for like 100 bucks. Durable? Will it last? I say so, it's still holding up to this day and that's where I plan on buying my paint.

That seems a bit pricey for the paint. My friend got some paint for about $450 for a gallon. I know it depends on color though.

Dude I don't know where you are going for paint but that is crazy. What kind of paint is it? Are you planning on painting the door jams and under hood. That will determine how much paint you will need for the base clear. If you arn't painting painting the jams I think that you will only need a half gallon. And the olive color that you are looking for is in the nissan sentra. I think that its a 98. Not for sure. If you have a friend that mixes paint you might be able to have him mix up a half pint for you and then you can tell him lighter or darker more green or more yellow. Keep track of what you put in there so you know how to make the big batch of it. But you have to have an idea of what color you want to get. Also you can play around with the pearls but that gets expensive. I would just go with a yellow pearl in it. That looks bad ass in green paint. If you want cheap clear that looks good and lasts go with TranStar. $70 for the gallon and $30 for the hardener. And it sprays great. And to make your bodywork look great get a long board sanding block. I think I paid $17 for the one I have and it has lasted 2 years so far and hasn't broken. make sure you get a high build primer. Prime twice. Sand in 180 first the after the second time you spray you will final sand with 400 then 600. But after you sand with 400 get some guide coat (black cheap spray paint) and spray the whole car down LIGHTLY. then sand all the black off. Anymore questions

Re: painting my car..questions about painting and paint code help.

As far as pricey paint, I am getting a gallon so I can do engine bay, jams, etc... I will only use PPG paint. He called his supplier on BMW Urban green and it was $550/gallon (that is if he were to mix it himself at his mixing bay) as I was looking through his mixing bay I actually saw a can called "olive green" so I asked him to call his rep and get a price on a gallon of that and he said that it would be around 7-800.

Man that sucks. I have gotten half gallons of silver for 150. I think that if you try to go with a cheaper car with the color code you might be able to get the price down. Meaning don't have a BMW color as your color.

Re: painting my car..questions about painting and paint code help.

that sound a little on the expensive side for paint. when i painted my grandpa's model A, for everything including epoxy coating the suspension and 2 gallons of different colors, primer, sealer, clear, ect totaled about $900. it was PPG. i guess that color is really expensive? my dad also knew the PPG sales rep from our area, so that could have helped out the price.
i would definatly go with 2 stage though. you'll only be adding about an hour maybe, of work to a 20+ hour job
