Default painting the car

just wondering if it is really THAT hard to paint a car... every place i have been wants a helluva lot of money to paint my car, it would be cheaper to just buy a sprayer, tarp off my garage, buy the paint, and do it up.. just wondering if it is really that hard, never painted anything with a sprayer before, besides my fence in the backyard, lol

Well you can make it look good yourself BUT you have to have paitents and it will take you a good couple of days to do it. If you want to do it in your garage you can. And I will tell you how. This is just how to paint none of the other stuff.

Once you get it all ready. Primed and taped off pull it in the stall and wipe it down with one of those sticky cheese cloths. The paint store will know what I am talking about. Now is the time you need to get the grey sealer and seal the car. Make sure you have enough light or you will miss spots.I meanLOTS Of light. I can't stress it enough. This is opional but it will turn out way better in the end. Take the car out and wet sand it with 1500 grid sandpaper. This starts to make a really smooth base. Then after you get it all dried take it back in and do the same with the cheese cloth. This time it is the color you will be spraying. When you spray the color you don't need it to be shinny. Just use alot of color so its nice and thick. And don't miss any spots it will look like a different color if you do. Now after you have lots of color you can wet sand again or just skip it. If you choose to wetsand don't spend very much or any time sanding on any of the edges. Cuz you will sand through the color. Then you have to repaint it. That sucks. Just like before wipe it doen and then begine the clear coat. Since this will be your first car to paint I sugjest don't try to make it shinny. Just make sure you are putting down clear on the car. It will have lots of orange peel but thats ok. Put as much clear down as you can. This will be wet sanded in the end. you will hate wet sanding after this. Then about 30 min after it is all done take the tape of very carefully. This way the edges roll over and you don't see the tape lines so bad. then I like to wait a week before I start wet sanding th e clear so it will harden up real nice. start with about 800 grit and go over it and then get more and more lighter grits. when you reach about 2000 or 2500 you can buff that ----. It will be so shinny it will look like a pro did it.

And there you go. thats how you paint a car and make it look good for the first time.

Youngbuck, did you do all the body/prep work on that car yourself and have Maaco spray it? or did you have Maaco do the whole shabang? How did it come out?
