Ozone-friendly chemicals lead to warming

...This unintended consequence now haunts the nations that signed both U.N. treaties.

By JOHN HEILPRIN, Associated Press Writer Sun Aug 20, 5:40 PM ET

WASHINGTON - Cool your home, warm the planet. When more than two dozen countries undertook in 1989 to fix the ozone hole over Antarctica, they began replacing chloroflourocarbons in refrigerators, air conditioners and hair spray.

But they had little idea that using other gases that contain chlorine or fluorine instead also would contribute greatly to global warming.

CFCs destroy ozone, the atmospheric layer that helps protect against the sun's most harmful rays, and trap the earth's heat, contributing to a rise in average surface temperatures.

In theory, the ban should have helped both problems. But the countries that first signed the Montreal Protocol 17 years ago failed to recognize that CFC users would seek out the cheapest available alternative.

The chemicals that replaced CFCs are better for the ozone layer, but do little to help global warming. These chemicals, too, act as a reflective layer in the atmosphere that traps heat like a greenhouse.

That effect is at odds with the intent of a second treaty, drawn up in Kyoto, Japan, in 1997 by the same countries behind the Montreal pact. In fact, the volume of greenhouse gases created as a result of the Montreal agreement's phaseout of CFCs is two times to three times the amount of global-warming carbon dioxide the Kyoto agreement is supposed to eliminate.

This unintended consequence now haunts the nations that signed both U.N. treaties.

more heat means more dead things which means more gas hence better pump prices
TURN UP YOUR AC BITCHES

well.. the treaty targetted ozone depletion which would melt the polor caps and flood the earth alot faster than global warming would :6

all scientists are retards.. forget about global warming and start building floating metropolises :6

There are no holes in the ozone layer. Remember NASA sending a manned expedition to Antarctica to study the effects of the "damaged" ozone layer? There was a lot of hoopla about it. Well, check NASA's site and archive... zero mention of any findings, radio silence in the years since.

The #1 greenhouse gas is water vapour. CFCs don't make the top ten.

Historically speaking, the earth's average surface temperatures have been higher than they are now. Historically speaking, for every 100,000 year span we are in an ice age for 90,000 of it. We're at the end of a 10,000 year warm cycle right now... get ready for the next ice age, bitches.

When are you going to start your public campaign(sp)? :P

Global warming caused by us.... ::) Everything in nature goes in cycles. We sometimes seem to be too narrow minded to remember this. Why do seem to to have this need to feel as though we are the only influence on the planet? :1

The only influence on the planet will be my campaign commercial drowning an illegal in a bowl of pico de gallo. Brace yourselves, sluts.

Its a conspiracy, america is releasing chemicals to skew data. There's no such thing as an ozone.

The jews invented the myth of an ozone to fund fake research groups to leach even more money off of the white man.

Coolest ---- ever is the new theory on global warming. We all know that the sun expands and will eventually encompass the entire solar system. So scientists are suggesting that it was getting hot in the mid 1800's right at the begining of the industrial revolution. All the polutants put in the atmosphere have kept us 5* cooler and now that we've cleaned up so much the earth is getting back to normal operating temprature and heating up again. The last ice age was caused by a meteor strike that poluted the atmosphere and cooled the planet. Same theory but my Rx w/o a cat is the meteor. Still to this day the hottest recorded surface tempratures were the early 1800's coincidance?

Protesters argued against a township ordinance adopted last month that bans the hiring and housing of people who cannot verify they are legal residents. A larger group massed across the street to support the new law.

cliff notes:

Whatever the explanation, if the trend continues, the global ozone layer should be restored to 1980 levels sometime between 2030 and 2070. By then even the Antarctic ozone hole might close--for good.

i say ---- antarctica, penguins are stupid anyways, lol
