Oregon Trail Pro Rally 2007

Chasing rally cars, so this has been my activity as of late.

The weekend before last was the Oregon Trail Rally. I'm a member of a volunteer group referred to as Sweep. We are the team that handles emergency response on stage during the rally. When we get the call we race down course and respond. Pulling cars out of ditches, flipping them over, medical response (we have 1-2 EMT ride alongs in each vehicle), whatever needs to be done.

It's a volunteer based group, so its easy for me to be able to do with basically no budget for it, other than having to get a HAM radio license. It's quite a bit of fun.

Here's some pictures, they arent the best but its hard to get much when youre working. If anyone is a WA local, you might wanna check out the Olympus Rally coming up next month. Pretty fun to watch Travis Pastrana and Ken Block and the other pro's rip thru the woods at high speeds.

Rally racing has always looked fun as hell to me. Wish I had a lot of money to throw at a car so I can abuse it as much as possible and not care. The only rally racing I've seen here in alabama is neighbors racing their lawnmowers through ditches. I'd be happy with just riding with a rally racer.

Rally racing is on my list of things to do.

Right on man. I didn't get a chance to go to any of the stages, but I went to the closing ceremonies.

Looks like it was a lot of fun!

My pics aren't that fun, we've all seen rally cars before, but here are a few anyways...

Everything from Travis Pastrana and Ken Block in $80,000 built STI's to Seattle's own Demon Rally Team in an old school Rabbit running the Max Attack 2WD class.

They won their class too. The driver said the motor is stock, said they spent like $600 on it. But they spent over $3000 per corner on the suspension setup. Just goes to show how important suspension is in a rally car.

No I will be there working. After a stage is completed, you will see my group blasting down the course clearing all the cars that are wrecked or broken with OK signs out. That is unless of course we get reports of injuries then we have to interrupt the stage.

I was there! I did road block! keep people from comming in through the back roads. It was pretty tight.

That EF fucken hauled ass!! I was real impressed.

At the corner I was guarding. We had a spectator that got too close to the course. A car slid right by and sent a nice rock into his head. His forehead swelled up about the size of a goose egg!! ;D ;D ;D ;D >:D

Me and jimmy were thinkin of throwing one of his 1st gens together or an old datsun truck and entering the olympus rally, but then we saw how much it would cost to enter. we were just going to cage it, throw bucket seats in, harneses, put big fog lights on the front, and gut it and call it a day....it was like $200 per person and we think that its a lil too short of notice, but theirs always next year >:D

Yeah it gets pretty hardcore out there. The last Rally put a driver down a Ravine over 200ft. Took a class B wrecker and about 200-225ft of winch line to get it out. Our Sweep captain was out there until about 1am.

Well, I wouldn't say no use.

We use the hell out of it, and then there's always the ARES and RACES group.

They have all kinds of uses like my dad always listens to the police scanner and the fire department and the emt's....he doesn't really talk on it toomuch though...i remember back when iw as going to get mine, (i think i was like 8 or 9) and back then you had to know morse code, but my dad was telling me you don't have to now

FooK 05-04-2007 04:18 PM

Re: Oregon Trail Pro Rally 2007

There's only morse code testing now in the "extra" license. There are two levels before that that are alot easier to acquire. I have a technician license, and then the next one up is the general license, which I'm told covers alot of frquency stuff.

The technician is easy to get, basically repeat the practice tests until you are getting high scores consistently, then go take the test.

i didn't know they had different levels. so what is the extent of your use with the technician license?

Re: Oregon Trail Pro Rally 2007

I forget what the actual terms are anymore, but IIRC, there are two different types of ham radios. Technician allows you to do it locally. Basically range is <50 miles or something. Other way is bounced off the atmosphere and you can talk overseas and such. I've only done the second kind once, as a guest on someone else's call sign.

Re: Oregon Trail Pro Rally 2007

There are several types of setups, 2 meter, 440, 6 meter, 10 meter, etc...

There are also ways to talk via IRLP using the internet to link nodes
