so this dude at work has a 3rd gen prelude with a h22. selling it for $3k. think i should get it? i would need a loan though. as of now i am driving my dads old car which he used as bait to get me to move. he said that i could drive the 2001 Solara until i find another car, sell it, and get the other car. i bring it up to him today, "NO, its gonna break or you're gonna break it, what you have is an excellent transportaion car to school and work, and the prelude is a piece of ----" mind you he hasnt seen it. car is mint. exterior mint, interior mint. i work with the guy that put in the motor. i dont know the miles or anything because i just found out about it today. i dont even want it as a project really, i just dislike the Solara a lot. its slow, its heavy, but it gets good gas mileage. and i love ludes til no end.

i understand his arguement, but i only asked because this was what was supposed to happen. the solara is a good car. works great, no problems. its just not for me.

what do ya'll think? and i know i need to find out more info, but for $1500 the title is mine, and the other $1500 the car is mine. i come to HMT because ya'll have some good opinions, well, most of the time.

i would just keep the solara :P

its a newer car, and it probably has a warranty, and why would you want to spend money that you dont have too :-\

oh, the solara has 115k miles and is out of warrenty. i just dont like it that much.

plus i need a loan anyway because i NEED to move out in a couple months (21yr old living with a 70yr old and a 64 yr old), so i figure if i can get a bigger loan i'd be all good. i dont really know ---- about loans so i figure i'd ask.

I had one of those back in highschool, and it was a piece of ----; it would turn on a dime tho. The old school B20's that are in the si models suck to be honest. and I wouldn't even think about buying the s model, which is a sohc carb motor. I think I have a pic of mine somewhere, it was clean on the outside, but slow as balls.

Take what you can get you ungreatful bastard. :P I'm assuming you're under the age of 18 and your dad is giving you this nice reliable car to get your broke ass around in so I would be happy you even have a car. My first car was older than me and ran/looked like complete ---- so I have no pitty for you.

dude, speaking from experience, you'll hate yourself for spending that $3000 on that prelude when you have to start paying it back. I would not buy it

Don't buy it. I have seen like 97 Civics for $3000. I even found a 99 Civic KB one time for $2500 with only 50k on stock motor. Needless to say it was gone before I could get there.

Im also 21, living on my own without parents help :-\, If I was in your position, I would just take the solara and overlook the prelude :y

And why don't you have enough money at 21? My car was $3400, I work MAYBE 10 hours a week with college, and I only had to borrow $1k from my parents which I am almost paid off

believe me, i'm moving out soon. i cant stand it here anymore.

why dont i have enough money? well, i've been jobless for about 2 months, but i just recently got a job at this honda dealership, started last monday. found out the hard way that having the "internet" on my phone was an extra $20/month, so i just got rid of that. just waitng for my girl to move out here so we can get a place together.
EDIT: and weed costs too damn much, so i recently quit that ----.

and daddy is making this decision because the car is still under his name, so technically its his car, although i drive it and he has his brand new solara to drive.

it is a pretty decent deal, but i think i'm gonna have to pass.

I would too. I'm going to be car-less in a few weeks and I'm stoked because that means I have an extra ~$800+ a month to play with and/or save for a new ride that won't cost me so damn much. :) I'm just lucky to have a company vehicle and a girlfriend that works 2 blocks away from my house and a mom that works 1 block from my house(I gave her the car anyways so she can let me borrow it for a few weeks while she is working). :6

I'm getting rid of it. Too much damn money. :-\ Before I got it I thought it was super important to have a nicer vehicle than most people my age, but now that I have one I realize the cost isn't worth it. I just want a cheap truck that fits my needs and no payments. Then I can get myself a car to ---- with. :y

I gave my mom a 93 Accord for Christmas that I traded my old EF SI hatch for. She needed a car and doesn't really make that much money and Christmas was coming up so......

I'd probably pass on the prelude, I think i read somewhere that those body styles were "death traps" Rock the Solara some more, free don't hurt. Oh since we are talking about mommy and daddy, I'm 22 and still live with mommy and daddy. I lived on my own for a little bit, but I moved back home. 1400 a month for rent + utilities for 15 months was more than enough. :3 I'll live with my parents over that anyday... for now at least.

Speaking as someone who has "been there and done that"....

I spent the first part of my 20's racking up debt and now Im spending the later part of my 20's paying it off. Debit Freakin sucks...debit is when other people make money off of your money. I would like to be the only one who makes money off of MY money.

I just got out of a car loan too (congrats boost I know how you feel) I was driving a 2000 Subaru 2.5 RS and I traded it for a '92 prelude and the payoff balance just to get rid of the damn thing. Learn how to pay your bills first before you get a loan....Im not trying to flame you. But the real world is harsh and for the type of loan you would probably get for a 3k$ car you would be at a ultra high interest rate, with most likley a ballon or something, at a cut-rate place that would repo that car in a heartbeat.

Get a pizza job and save some cash up. If you cant save 3k$ in a summer living at home you sure as hell shouldnt be getting a loan.

No matter what I lose, it's still not worth the $800 a month for the next 4 years until it's paid off. :-\

Right off the bat I lose about $1000 plus the ~$6500 I put down, but that ain't ---- compared to:

$800 a month
x 48 months
=$38400

i gotcha on the paying a shitload a month for the next 4 years. 7500 ain't too bad of a loss, you did beat the ---- outta it :D
And it dang beats the hell out of a lease. Cause with a lease you'd get fucked over twice, at least this way you are getting fucked once :P

That's actually why I don't buy new cars, plain and simple I can't afford it.
