Friends of mine are electricians. So they have been doing the scrap copper thing forever.
One guy I know has his kids stripping wire as a daily chore around the house.
Scrap yards around here won't take charred copper though. They are trying to cut down on people that would just burn off the insulation and bring in the copper when it cooled.

this tub is prob at about 40 lbs now.. at 2.75lb where I live. I have about another 50lbs of copper i still need to strip in the garage. i just sit and watch TV and strip copper most weeknights
burning wire is considered "dirty" and pays about half as much here.

Just on the news last night there was a hotel under renovation and someone stole all the copper out of the air condition units in each room.
I think the law here is something about if a car is on the side of the road with a sticker you can pick it up and run it in the paper for two weeks and if they don't claim it or something you can keep it. I don't know the exact laws. I know my cousin got a Civic that way.
