Oil viscosity and weight
I know civics call for 5w-30, but does it really matter what type you use? i been using valvoline 10w-30 for sometime now, but i was thinking maybe today to start running the 5w-30 again since it calls for it. dont know what anyone else does.

Re: Oil viscosity and weight
for winter use 5w30 synthetic
|
Re: Oil viscosity and weight
5w30 all the time.............
|
Re: Oil viscosity and weight
i woudnt run 5w30 on high mileage engines or boosted ones
personally i like very thick oils for summer time |
Re: Oil viscosity and weight
15w50 in my boosted civic. I tried everything so far, and it seems I burn them up up fast, so 15w50 is the only oil that last to 500 miles, then again I drove my car daily autobahn driving at average speeds of 120mph. 40 miles daily

then again, its probably all good if you let your motor completely warm up before you drive it, eh? |
Re: Oil viscosity and weight
well i have around 108K on my car, and i drive pretty hard, over 100mph alot, but im still n/a, but use the n2o sometimes, hahaha, you think 5w30 syntec blend or just 5w30 regular like castrol gtx or penzoil?
|
Re: Oil viscosity and weight
I'm using regular castrol 20w-50w with 70k miles boosted 99' si. the thicker the oil, the better it holds upto heat and wear.

Re: Oil viscosity and weight
Since boosted, 20-50 winter, 10-30 summer
|
Re: Oil viscosity and weight
i use 15w50 mobil 1 all the time
|
Re: Oil viscosity and weight
20w50
|

Re: Oil viscosity and weight
doesnt matter.
i ran 20w50 in my integra to try and get a handle on my oil control issues, i run 10w40 in turbo cars :) |

Re: Oil viscosity and weight
now for brands of oils. which synthetic is company is better? I used mobil one, but a lot of people say castrol is better, how about Amsiol? royal puple? I cant get those here, but maybe I can get my brother to smuggle some to me. ;D . the only 2 synthec I can get here are mobil1 and castrol. it sucks
|
Re: Oil viscosity and weight
from what i've heard royal purple and mobil are the top dogs

Re: Oil viscosity and weight
apparently motul is one of the best
Like I said at -20 degrees, your engine will start up like if it was 80 degrees if you use synthetic oil. |
Re: Oil viscosity and weight
5w30 = easy starts, but at 200-220 F oil temp, they are the same weight (30)...........
10w30 = too thick at cold temps, 5w30 gets oil to the bearings faster. Shall we have school on how to decode the oil viscosity ratings? |

Re: Oil viscosity and weight
I use hav5w30 all the time. motor has abou 187,000 boosted d16a6 with 14b
|
Re: Oil viscosity and weight
It's time to change my oil (been over 3,000) for the first time in the boosted d16. It's about 1/2 a quart low using 10w-30. I was planning on using 10w-30 for winter, too. Any problem with that? And only losing 1/2 a quart in the summer on 10w-30 why switch to 20w-50?

Re: Oil viscosity and weight
There is 100% man made *best
there is 100% syntetic that is just refined dino oil *good there is synthetic blend that is dyno and refined dino oil *ok I use amsoil and it is one of the top rated man made ----, I dont know what else is man made but there has been many articals on the interweb about it. They do not have to advertize if its man made or dino oil which is a big contraversy because its way cheaper to make it from dino but they can still charge the same price according to the goverment. |
