Default OBDII Scanner for Toyota, Which One?

Hey guys, got a question for you techies out there. Can any OBDII scanner work with my car or do I have to get one that is compatible with Toyotas? My guess is that all OBDII scanners are the same but you just need a repair manual to translate the codes. I have an irking feeling that I am wrong though. Someone please school me. BTW, I have a '99 Corolla.

All cars with OBDII only use one scanner. most scanners will scroll the code across the screen, after it is read. advance autoparts sells a neat little scanner for $150.
