Officials at the National Transportation Safety Board are recommending the government require data recorders in all passenger vehicles. David Sobel of EPIC says his group has privacy concerns - especially when drivers are unaware of the presence of the devices

If it's embedded in the ECU I would buy a standalone...problem solved. ;D

I would wire mine into my grandmas car. just hook more than one up at the same time in the slowest car I own.

It is already happening on smaller scales. rental cars have begun putting black boxes and GPs units in their cars to accurately track mileage on their cars. Plus, if you take the car out of state when you told them you werent going to, they can find out and charge you. They can also track how fast you traveled. People claim that soon they will charge you more to rent a car from them if they see that you were speeidng the last time you rented from them. Also, think about Onstar. It is basically a GPS/car controller with a 2 way radio. Onstar knows where your car is, if your airbags were deployed, etc. Granted, it is nice to have such a service in case of an accident, theft, lock out, etc., but who is to stop them from looking at the data to determine how fast you were going when you crashed into another car? The insurance companies would love to get their hands on that type of info. All of this ---- worries me, b/c I value my privacy a lot, and I do not think that driving habits are the only cause of accidents.

I wonder if rental companys can tell if you take the car through a corn field and done doughnuts with there cars and ---- like that. lol.

the black box, if something that unconstitutional ever were to exist. will be easily crackable. all of the inputs will be electronic, therfor we will be able to use an "AFC" type of thing and just change the inputs before they reach the box. No big deal, except for the whole BIG BROTHER-NESS. It'll never fly anyway, there is no way.

hwo they have it set up. you wouldent be alloud to access the internet or open certine files with out verification from a server. it would be built in to your mother board and give full access to your computer to whoever built it and has software on it.

This could all be easily implemented right now seeing as how most people on the internet think that they themselves are computer illiterate and can be easily fooled into this. But the fact of the matter is unless there is a law (even then) protecting this device then there would be ways around it, to come to think of it even before it is in use in the public. Come to think of it now spyware can already have control of computers over the internet, OEMS and Microsoft can already have full access to your computer if they felt like switching around a couple things (remote assistance) hell even some fat little 13 year old kid with no balls can have control over your computer considering how many patches they've had to apply to remote assistance. As for transfering files that's not happening anytime soon unless we all start receiving fiber to the home and find new materials to use for a backbone across america. The internet should be left untampered and unregulated, or else our goverment really is evil : P. Oh yeah i just remembered what ever did happen to the whole FBI carnivore program, heh.

How is it that they "think" they are computer illiterate? Are you saying they actually have super human computer programming powers and just don't know it yet? Is that kinda like ESP or like that movie where Mel Gibson can hear what women think? Please explain.

I read about these in some magazine. A kid with a new firebird killed someone, and they found out from the "black box" that he was going like 100 when he hit the other car. I don't think they were actually alowed to use it as evidence in the case though.
