Not Honda related...for the Jeep guys

I just bought a 91 jeep cherokee for my winter beater today, and it's got a couple problems that i can't seem to find an answer to. First one is pretty major...it's got some really shitty ABS that crapped out bad, and it doesn't want to stop until the light for the abs comes on and stays on. Now i read that jeep had some huge recall for it, but is there some way i can disconnect it and bypass all that abs crap and still have decent braking?
Second problem is almost as bad...every once and a while up on the highway at around 70mph it'll hit a bump and the whole front end starts shaking very violently, and very uncontrollably. The first time i just kinda rode it out and it stopped, but the second and third times it shook so bad that the jeep felt like it was going to flip over or roll. Has anyone ever encountered any of these problems and know how to correct them? Jeeps are foreign to me...i'm a Honda nut :-\

im pretty sure that your abs problem can be fixed, just pull the abs fuse/relay. im not sure how well it will brake after that tho.

as for the shaking, does it lack a little steering response, like some play in the wheel before the steering reacts? if so, its probably your track bar. just replace it. It could also be your steering stabilizer, but i highly doubt it.

you can get replacements on ebay cheap, or junkyard one. they are very interchangeable. i have an 89 comanche and used a track bar from a 2004 jeep wrangler rubicon as a replacement.

good luck!

ps - here's your recall info

1990-91 w/ABS: Hydraulic control unit for antilock braking system can experience excessive brake-actuator piston-seal wear, which could lead to loss of antilock function and reduced power assist.

1990-91 w/ABS: Improper insertion/crimping of hose fittings can result in loss of ABS function.
