normal/safe/boosted egt?

just installed my autometer egt. autometer recommends to install it 1-2 inches from turbine outlet on boosted and 1-2 from head in manifold on n/a cars. i installed it just after my turbine outlet in the downpipe. what is normal safe boosting egt. the most i've seen so far is 1300 degree. that was during a 110mph+ pull full throttle shifts 11psi boost starting from 1st gear. 11.0-12.0 afr and not hearing any detonation.

what do you guys think?

I wish I was smart enough to tell you, but TTT because I want to know too.

I would say close the gap on the plugs a little bit. mabe like one point, and then retard the timing to about .75 degrees per lb of boost and it should bing the egt down a little. it seems a little hot to me. but not that hot.

But shouldnt it be a little hotter since it is after the turbo?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought retarding the timing actually increases EGT?

And I would think the EGT would be lower after the turbo just because it is further from the point of combustion. It should also be lower because part of the thermal energy (hot exhaust) is being turned into mechanical energy (rotation of compressor wheel). Then again I am no physicist (can't even spell it ;)) so I may be wrong and sometimes I wear glasses to look smart . 8);D

Burning lean and rich will increase EGT... You have to find the sweet spot. As to what the ideal temp is... Not sure... Don't know enough about turbos yet... TTT!

Burning rich NEVER is as hot as burning lean though. Why do u think pistons' puddle and valves get burnt? Too lean...never torched a motor from runnin too rich. ;D

I'm afraid I must disagree. Running rich will raise EGT as well as keep more of the pipe hotter for a longer time. Running lean doesn't get your engine any hotter, EGT's will go down but the destruction comes from leaving extra oxygen in the cylinders and on your red-hot pistons that just saw a temperature spike. I like this analogy- say you are using a firesaw (torch) and you wanna make a cut. You put the fire up to the metal, get it hot as hell, then blow a whole bunch of extra oxygen through it. You cannot make a your charge give off less heat by taking away fuel and leaving a less-than-stoich mixture. I ran really rich for a week. I burned out two stainless flex pipes. Running stoich or lean wouldn't do that.
