No more Hondas....Hello toyota

Well, Im giving up on Honda, after being a proud CRX driver for 6 years, Im giving them up. Im tired of theives, sky high prices, etc.

So Ive decdied to get me a Supra. I started looking into buidling up an older Mark III style supra. Turns out getting a JDM 1JZ-GTE twin turbo engine is cheaper then a B16??? Whats with that? Anyways I think Honda engine prices are getting a bit out of control. Ive also heard rumors of some engine supplies from Japan "drying up" So Im moving along to a road less traveled....

My goal is building a 1jz sleeper supra, from my understanding the existing 3M-gte engine was a bit dated before it ever went into the supra in the 80's + 90's. The 1jz seems to be everything its bigger brother, the 2jz is (mark 4 supra). In fact much can be swaped between blocks. (cylinder head/fuel system/etc)

anyone on this list have any experience with Mark III supras or 1jz/2jz engines? The engine seems pretty straightforward: add boost add fuel and tune as needed. Any advice?

I dont know much about supras except that you can make them really fast. I've drove one last summer twin turbos and wow

yeah, the motor may not be real expensive, but parts still add up...

the engine that predated the 2jz was the 7m-Ge or GtE if you got it turbo'd or not. One thing I would do is get a single turbo, no that TT ----, it will run harder!

Good luck bro
I think MKIII's are sexy, hell even an MKII. I almost bought one a while back. By the way I heard those MKIII are notorious for blowing head gaskets.

I believe you're speaking of the 7M-GTE. It's a pretty strong motor so long as you get a metal HG and torque it a bit over specs; BHGs are a common thing - but easily fixed.

More info here:

http://www.supras.org.nz/techinfo/bhg.htm

Turns out their website is being updated, but still good info:

http://www.7mpower.com/

My buddy's dad's Supra is in the top 10. It's funny, he's running the 30-1010 AEM EMS which was meant for a Honda ;D

Like Honda, Toyota's stuff will run forever. You can find a lot more info if you search Google. As for performance...most of the mods are bolt on affairs. If you go standalone EMS, the sky is the limit.

The 1JZ-GTE was made avalible in late 91 in Japan. As is my understanding, it was what the Mk 3 was orginally designed for, but due to long R+D process the 7m was put into the car.

The 1JZ is an oddball engine, like the CRX's ZC engine. That came in a couple of early 90's Toyotas. The Supra, and Soarer (Lexus GS for us Yanks.

I have heard good and bad as far as parts go with the engine... Ive heard that like a ZC...parts can be scavenged from other Jz engines, of course Ive also seen information that is contrary to that.

I'd like to go the 1Jz route due to the fact that it seems to be a much more capable platform. It shares the stout bottom end of a 2Jz, and instead of 2 turbos actingsequently (2Jz), they are acting concurrently together.

I guess that most bolt-ons from a 2jz fit a 1jz.

I think Im straying away from using the 7m though, Ive heard that due to its short rod/stroke, it tends to give out a bit in the upper revs....maybe Im wrong about that?

The HG issue is new to me, thanx for the info..maybe I can find a nice body/interior with a blown gasket, and clame it as a major fixer upper....Anymore info like that would be helfull
