The closest track to me and the one I race at most often is an NHRA track and they're freaks about safety. Sometimes I hate it, but that's until I go to track that's more lax. Going up to Norwalk is nuts because you have the guy waving in burnouts before they release the cars from the line. It's retarded.
Regardless, I go to a minimum of 12 race days at my local track (NHRA) and a handful of "import events" during the summer (mix of NHRA, IHRA & NDRA). Imports are more apt to snap an axle or run out of gas. I've only seen one incident of a car actually blowing up and I think it was the guy's manifold blowing off his car and going through his hood.
It's the old muscle cars that break and spill ---- all over the track. But if superchargers, NOS and turbos are becoming more relavant, it was only a matter of time for them to address it. It sucks for people that don't go out very often.
And the guy that was talking about pants and helmets and ----. You need a helmet if you run quicker that 13.99. Long pants and a shirt with sleeves are required no matter how slow you go.

Our local track is a NHRA track. They have midnight madness starting at 11 on Sat. nights. Anything and everything can race. Kinda funny though, you'll see people in SUV's full of people on 20-24's racing lol Really over run with Mustangs and turbo desiels.
