Re:New servers at work, finally!

They might be they are Dell 6400's the 6300's look the same too. They have four 700mhz Xeon cpu's with 2MB of cache, four 36GB SCSI hard drives, 2GB memory installed(8GB max). I really wanted the 8450's with eight 900mhz cpus, but that is over kill for our needs. These things only cost $1000/each but you can find them cheaper if you look around. But I need two identical units since we are going to cluster them.

I just picked up some racks today so no more ghettoness. We are a multi-million dollar company and we are using old school desktop computers as servers.

You think using laptops for servers is ghettoness. You should check out the computers controlling all the navigational aids at the airport here. They're from the 70s and take up house-sized buildings.

Naw the old ghettoness will be gone in 1-2weeks. We had a catostrophic data loss and we were down for over a week. $10,000day x 7 days = $70,000 so it costed us some money. We could get new equiptment but our needs are small. Iam not one of those admins that buys ---- we dont need. New servers clustered and Windows Server 2003 Enterprise, since Microsucks is going to stop supporting Server 2000 fully. And its all going in a rack with that spider web of network cables. Even if I did buy new I would just buy the cheap ass SC420 Dell's to achieve the same thing but I wanted features like hot-swappable: hard drives, PCI cards and power supplies. These beast are made to run forever and a day and not stop. Fuckers costed $10,000 new, mine were a G each . For 2 2650's and a PowerVault it was like $18,000, that was what a consultant pitched us.

Re:New servers at work, finally!

Nice. I just got some new servers, an MSA1000 SAN for 250 gb storage and an Ultrium backup unit. All connected together on a FC SCSI backbone. I can do realtime tape backups in the middle of the day on a single tape! That rules, cuz right now I have to change 14 tapes a day and 3 of my servers are bleeding over to a second tape so I have to swap them in every morning. I'll take pics tomorrow and post em up if I can remember to take my cam with me.

We didnt get a new tape backup since we only have 25GB to backup and our Sony AIT-1 works fine in only 2hours20minutes. We did switch over to Veritas Backup Exec 9.1. We were using NovaStor which was the main reason we were down for a week. Thier software absolutly sucks and I would suggest no one uses it. We are going to start implementing a Disk to Disk to Tape backup and do a tape once a week instead of everyday and differentials on the disk everyday.

Re:New servers at work, finally!

I use Backup Exec (7.5-8.6)on my old servers now and I'm ordering 9.1 today to use with the new Ultrium. Disk to Disk to Tape is definately the way to go and is how I'll be implimenting our new setup.

Here you go Mike

Old and Busted:

New Hotness:

http://users.adelphia.net/~purecrxta...0LCD%20KVM.jpg

I have more old servers, but that's the main bunch of them.

The new ones are HP/Compaq Proliant DL380's and each one has a 2.4ghz XEON processor, a gig of ram and 2 18.2 gig SCSI primary drives. Then the SAN has 250 Gig of space that I can allocate to whetever I want. The new tape backup is an HP Storageworks 460. The pullout LCD KB combo is connected to a KVM that lets me switch between all the servers.

So, I replaced 15 servers, 4 monitors/kb's/mice with 6 servers and 1 lcd monitor with built-in kb and mouse ;)

Re:New servers at work, finally!

They're a good bang for the buck server and Insight Manager makes monitoring the servers a breeze.

I think we got everything: 6 servers, san w/7 72.8 gig u320 SCSI Hot swap Drives, storageworks 460, lcd kvm and rack for around $30K. Not a bad price considering the other quotes we got for the exact same thing were from $40-90K. Our IT Manager has a long standing relationship with this vendor, so we got a good deal.
