new rules regarding gas and shit, wtf is CAFE?!?

http://editorial.autos.msn.com/artic...&topart=luxury

New rules will force the car kings to shift their focus. Revised CAFE standards require automakers to raise the average mileage of their car and truck fleets to 35 mpg by 2020. Proposed pollution standards in the U.S. and Europe may force even more dramatic increases. And if California wins the right in court to regulate global-warming emissions, you might just kiss your super-powered car goodbye — at least those that rely solely on gasoline.

---- California. Just cause they have the largest population state in the US doesn't mean I should have to do what they say.

The issue is, cars get basically the same mpgs on average as they did 30 years ago. 30 years of R&D and yet Honda Civics still get around 30mpg. The market doesn't even offer any solutions for people who want to have high fuel economy. The best you are going to find at a reasonable price is 30ish mpgs which is a joke. I don't necessarily believe in the government telling private business what to do, but I also believe private business has to show reasonable progress. The automotive industry has not even tried to put out more fuel efficient vehicles and that is why they are getting hit with this. Basically what they are trying to do is get car companies to stop making SUVs so people can buy smaller cars and feel safer because they don't have to worry about 4000lbs cars while they are in their 2000lbs car. Bitch all day, but the automotive industry knew it was coming and did very little to make a smooth transition. Instead they decided to capitalize on it while they could.

People do want smaller cars. They just don't feel safe in them going 75mph next to a 4500lbs SUV. That is where a lot of the issue lies. If you don't believe me, ask anyone why they don't want to drive around in a small car. I guarantee most will say they feel they are unsafe because of big cars around them and they are afraid they won't be able to keep up on the highway.

People claim they care about the environment but really it comes down to the fact that people can't afford spending $3.00 a gallon for gas and getting 15mpg. If they are spending $3.00 a gallon, they need to get 25-30mpg at minimum. People are sick of not being able to buy stuff they want because gas has increased 300% in 10 years and their pay check has only increased maybe 5-10%. It's keeping them from buying stuff they want and they see no end in sight. So its either make more money, yea right, or reduce spending. Get it? It's not a difficult concept.

people buy 4 banger hondas CAUSE THEY ARE CHEAP.

your average turbo honda is going to get crappy mileage, especially if you mash the gas a bit.

there are several v8 cars that will get around 25mpg average. i cant even get 15mpg in my camaro driving pure city and with a heavy foot. the lowest ive ever gotten out of it was 20mpg and that was all city driving and you know i love the exhaust note

if people wanted to buy small cars, then the suv would not be so hugely popular. They passed bullshit emissions laws that shrunk stationwagons the size of trucks to unibody shitboxes. so people bought trucks and suv sales skyrocketed. Look at how many people buy big ass trucks, suvs or wish they could. I should not be told what I can drive because some cheapass driving a tin can 'doesn't feel safe' next to me. you want to drive a beer can with a motor that's you're choice, but leave me alone
