New member intro

Hi folks,

I'm a new member here so I guess I need to introduce myself. My name is Mike Hannah and I live in Birmingham, Al (redneck country) thus the "alrednek" user name. I'm an old hotrodder that was a dedicated street racer and drag racer "back in the day" which was about 30 years ago. I'm slowly trying to get back into the automotive scene although I'm more of a traditional Chevy muscle car guy. I understand that this site is mostly for Hondas and other imports but I probably share the same interests as you guys since I'm all about doing my own work on my vehicles whenever possible and doing it as economically as possible. I decided a few months ago to learn how to build and setup a turbo system on a vehicle and I'm gradually getting an understanding of what it will take by doing a lot of reading and asking questions. I decided that I'd build a twin turbo 283 to put in my 1982 Chevy pickup so it'll have the power to pull my 3500# 1970 Nova on a 2000# open trailer. My Nova has a 383 forged bottom end full roller valvetrain Nitrous engine in it but isn't finished yet. As far as my turbo project goes I've had my block cleaned and rough bored so I could order pistons. I've bought a GM forged steel crankshaft and SpeedPro forged pistons so far and I plan to order my Scat 4340 I beam rods next. I found a couple of Volvo T3 turbos at the junkyard and have taken them apart and cleaned all the parts and had the turbine shafts and compressor wheels balanced. I just need to put the new rebuild kits in them and they'll be ready to run. These turbos have .48 turbine housings now, but some of the guys over at Turbobricks.com (Volvo website) have told me that I need to use .63 Volvo housings because I'll have a serious backpressure issue with the .48 housings. Another member of this site told me that I might find some here since most of you guys prefer the .48 housings. I've added this site to my list of turbo- related resources that I'll be checking regularly. I see that most of you folks do your own fabbing which is exactly what I do on my stuff. I might even be able to help some of you out since I have a shop with a lathe, Bridgeport milling machine, Miller welder and various other fabrication equipment. I better stop now before I wear out my welcome with this extremely long post. I'm looking forward to learning a few things from you guys and maybe finding a few parts that I need.

Mike

whiterice 03-25-2008 02:57 PM

Re: New member intro

ok. still didin't read it all.
if you have access to junkyards, you can get .63 a/r turbine housing from the ford svo/t-bird turbo coupe/mekur xr4ti (manual) or nissan 300zx.

let's see pics of ur nova and pickup. you have a Volvo too?

Re: New member intro

I apologize for the novel- I didn't want to do a half-assed intro. I guess I did anyway since I didn't post any pics. I'll try to get some pics to post but don't expect too much. The Nova is a "work in progress" and the truck is being driven by my son until he get's his wrecked Mustang fixed (damn shame- he wrecked a really nice 2003 Mach I). I haven't been able to find a single Thunderbird turbocoupe, turbo Mustang or any turbo'd Nissans at the local Pull-A-Part to pluck T3's out of. I do find a few Mercedes diesel T3's and an occasional Volvo with a Mitsubishi turbo, but slim pickin's other than that. I think I might have a line on a Volvo .63 turbine housing from a member of Turbobricks.com.

Hey, y'all are gonna have to explain this deal about postin' porn. It must be an inside joke or something....

at least post pictues of your cars for now. no need to scare off an older new member that could have good info down the road for not posting porn lol. he could always help out somebody with a fab or non turbo specific question later....never know.

Here are some pics of my unfinished Nova. Yeah I know it needs quite a bit of work. I have most everything to finish it but I haven't been able to work on it due to a back injury. Maybe I'll be able to get back on it after I have surgery in a few weeks. The engine setting in the engine bay is just a junk motor I'm using to mock everything up.

Well I didn't read your intro because it's one huge block of text. Tips for writing: space that ---- out. I'd read it all if it was broken into paragraphs but that huge chuck of words just makes my head hurt.

I see you have a pretty shweet looking nova though, my dad had a nice SS which he sold soon before I was driving and before I got an interest in cars, unfortunately.

Good to see another Alabama member too, there aren't too many here :( I'm in Madison, up north by Huntsvegas.

Thanks man. I imagine the street racing scene in B'ham is scarce since that guy got killed last year. I like Steele but haven't been in a couple of years. I've been going to Huntsville and Holiday Beach. I'm going to check out Bama Dragway (bamadragway.com) this year since that guy that ran L.A. County Raceway (shut down last year after over 30 years) bought it. I hope he can make something out of that track. He has at least 3 Pro Mod events scheduled this year and some Nostalgia racing events.

From first impressions there seems to be some decent people here. Then there's the usual snot-nosed punks that have to show there childish ignorance with their attempts to degrade someone else so they'll feel like they're better than them. Sometimes these assholes can even contribute to a board if they really do like cars more than showing their immaturity. BTW, where are you from?

Yeah MMP is a nice track- they had some great NMCA racing down there a couple of years ago. If George Howard has to close Huntsville Dragway down he'll put all his focus on MMP and have some hella good events there. George is a primo track owner/ promoter. He had a $101,000 payout event at Huntsville in 2006 for Top Fuel dragsters. Imagine TF dragsters running on a 1/8 mile track...it was awesome (Clay Millican won the money and set a new 1/8 mile e.t. and m.p.h. record- last 1/8 mile record was from 1978).

Yeah, I think I know by now that the intro was too long and didn't have any paragraphs. I got used to posting that way from being on the junkyard turbos and carbureted blowers Yahoo message boards. I was just making an observation when I made the Hondas and imports comment- I see now that there are some muscle-car fans too. You'll have to read the "way to long" intro post to see what the plans are for the Nova. If I go through that ---- again I'll get my nuts cut out for posting a novel.

I get it about the long post and paragraphs ----, OK? Thanks for the comment on the Nova, I think they're sweet rides myself (wish mine was an SS). Duh-huh for another Alabama member.

Old school muscle heads can be cool. I learned from some of the really old school gear heads. One of my first cars (1950 Ford) had a flat head inline 6 cylinder. That was when cars were made to be worked on. Us old heads know a lot of the shortcuts, know how to make oddball fixes, and know a lot of things that won't work since we've tried most of it already. We might be able to help some of the young-uns just by telling them why something they want to try will or won't work.

I wasn't trying to get a lot of shots of the seats- it was the console I was trying to show off. My "home- made, padded and twill-covered, aluminum-frame console with hinged lid over storage compartment" console didn't get a single damn compliment. And I guess nobody saw the raised Bowtie emblems on the sides and on the hinged lid either. Now that pisses me off. ----!

Hey, I resent that ---- you said about me, calling me a "lazy inbred ----" and a "hillbilly". I want you to know that I ain't lazy, dammit. If you call me lazy again I'll have to kick yer arse!

Not Mazda seats, '93 Ford Probe. It's a damn shame to put Ford parts on a Chevy. I used a Ford 9 inch rear end and a Ford starter solenoid too. Ford makes a few good parts, but not many.

Thanks for all the compliments on the Nova guys.
