New Harddrive recognized by BIOS but not Windows? (NWS)

I need computer help again, and since you guys never let me down... :)

Dell 2400 running Windows XP (SP2)

I currently have 2 40gig hard drives installed.
I pulled out the extra drive (the one with my porn etc)
Plugged in a 160gig HD (will be my new home for porn)
The BIOS recognizes the 160gig drive and so does "device manager"
If I open Windows explorer though it doesn't show up (only shows 1 drive, my main one)
I cannot access that 2nd drive for some reason.

The new drive should be formatted already because I bought it used (should have porn and games on it).

Suggestions? Thanks... oh and since you guys work for porn instead of food heres a shot of Sandys ass from www.sexyteensandy.com
Ill post the good hardcore stuff if the hard drive issues is fixed. lol

was the last owner running windows for sure? If he was running linux it probably wouldnt show up in XP. You can always boot up with a boot disk and run FDISK on it. Windows might have some built-in partitioning ---- you can try too. Right click on my computer, go to manage then disk management

Go to control panel, administrative tools, computer management, then click on disk management and see what options you have it should be listed as disk 0 or disk 1, or disk 2.. right click it and see if you need to format it or something

+1

It probably needs formatting/partitioning for whatever reason.

letter should have nothing to do with it. you can name it z and nothing would change for the OS detecting it. i would reformat it and start fresh. also check the jumper settings and make sure it is a slave or cable select and not master. better yet, see if you can boot the 160 HDD on its own. if that works then its a jumper issue between the two.

jumper

You should never use cable select, and always hook the drives up as if you were using cable select (primary at the end of the cable). Sometimes wierd hardware conflicts occur because of that, although it's super rare.

Cable select hasn't ever caused me problems.

Update

Jumpers have been triple checked
Will not boot up if it is the only drive connected
Checked disk management and it does not show up
Still shows up in BIOS (Seagate ST3160021A 160gig)
HD is plugged into the Slave spot on the cable (even though im using jumpers)

type source in your search bar and then go through and reinstall your drivers

SATA????

Re: New Harddrive recognized by BIOS but not Windows? (NWS)

No its not SATA, using a standard IDE cable

The master boot record is fucked. Use a MBR repair utility like ontrack disk manager. You should be in good shape after that. I had the same thing happen with a drive I found that a roomate left. I recovered 100gigs of teh hardcore prOn. Some of it was prego porn though. :l It had me wondering about him. :3

rofl... in the disk manager you should have an option to initialize the drive.

Do that.. then report back nig.

The drive doesn't show up in Disk Manager.
Shows up in "Devices" and in BIOS only.
Under Devices it says the drive is working properly although you cant actually get to the drive.

Im looking for a (free) MBR utility now to give that a shot.

Torrent Hiren's boot CD. MULTIPLE different softwares.

Found Hirens latest BootCD and am downloading it now.

I just found out (from previous seller) that this Harddrive was previously used in his modded Xbox (has some games on it). How does that affect everything when I plug it into a Windows OS computer? Im not familiar with using a HD on an Xbox. How will that affect fixing the problem?

Well there's a pretty critical peice of information you left out. You are going to need to re-format the drive. All data will br lost but it should work fine then.

Re: New Harddrive recognized by BIOS but not Windows? (NWS)

If it was used in an xbox it may be locked. It's locked in the drives firmware, unless the seller unlocked it before the sale. It's a paper weight unless you have access to the original xbox it was in if it is still locked.

If it's not locked, make sure the main drive is on the end connector of the IDE cable and is set to Primary, or master. If the second drive is on the same cable, it should be set to slave. If the second drive is on it;s own cable, make sure it's on the last connector, and set to primary. The cd-rom that shares either cable should be set to slave. Also check to see if the main drive is set to master single, or master.

use the dos prompt and run:

FDISK /MBR (driveletter):

to rebuild the mbr.

Another update

The Harddrive was ONLY used in an Xbox, never in a PC.

Aparantly when you put a HD in an Xbox you have to do some trickery to it for it to work. I have to undo that now... Looks like Ive got more reading to do.

Try PartitionMagic? (free on bittorrent)

It's some pretty low level software that I've never had a problem recognizing a drive with, and you can completely reformat to whatever type of format you want.

Re: New Harddrive recognized by BIOS but not Windows? (NWS)

Ran Hirens BootCD.
Tried to use "killdisk", partition magic and some other partitioning software I downloaded. They will all show the drive but none can erase it. They all give me "write errors". :(

If anyone knows some other fix besides loading it into a modded Xbox to "unlock" it let me know.

Re: New Harddrive recognized by BIOS but not Windows? (NWS)

The drive may physically be dead. You may have to accept that if nothing else works.
