Yep, all you should have to do is plug the ethernet cord into the router. Is it in the right port? I'm sure you got that much, just checkin anyway. You try unplugging the power from the router for about 10s then starting it back up?

Try plugging the ethernet from the modem directly into the PC. You'll be able to at least verify the internet is working. If it isn't then I'd call the company, sometimes they need to update the MAC address from the modem. If it DOES work, do you have an install disc for the router? I don't know about brands other than linksys, but linksys has a disc...you run setup, plug modem directly to pc, it retrieves the needed info, then you plug the router into the pc or something and...anyway it sets it up for you.

yea, i've tried all that, but this modem sends the signal via usb, the linksys disc doesn't say ---- about usb. i'm setting up the network for my xbox, and its failing the DNS server test, if that's any help.

the internet doesn't work in the computer through the cat5 cable, only the usb. if i plug in the cat5, it says i am connected to 2 networks, local network 1 and 2. this ---- is aggrovating

Go to start menu (or control panel) - network connection - verify you are connected and that the DCHP has assigned your computer an IP address (usually 198.168.1.101 by default). If all these are are in order you will probably have to call customer support and read them your MAC address prinnted on the back/bottom/side of your modem.

lemme ax you... are you plugging both ethernet and usb in at the same time? if so...only plug in the ethernet (although the linksys setup shouldn't care usb/cat5, one thing at a time...). If your interwebs don't work with only cat5, then you might have to switch from usb to cat5 in the modem settings. If this is the case, you'll need to google something like "[modem model] configuration ip address", plug in the modem to pc (via usb), and use your browser to go to to the ip address and change the settings...

If net does work with only cat5, sweet. Run the setup for your router.

i figured it out, i had to call the company to reset it. thanks for you help gentleman. and i use that term loosely you fuckers
