Its not all about the quanity of the ram quality plays a large role as well. And if you are good with computers or know someone who is build your own its so much cheaper. I just built a fast ------- computer for my friend only cost 1000 and ended up faster than the 3000$ pc's from the big name companys.
My friends build
Amd opteron 146 oc'd 2.6
gig of ocz pc3200 gold series
ati x800xt 512 vid card
dfi lanparty ultra d mobo
antec sonata tower
sony dual cdr dvdr
200 gig sata 3.0 7200 rpm

To be honest unless you are playing bf2 you dont need 2gigs of ram until vista comes out . And buying 2 512 sticks and shoving it in there is not a good idea and could actually make it slower. Most ram runs in dual channel these days so you would have to have the exact same ram that the computer came with and hope they havent done any revisions on it otherwise it would only work in single channel.

Building your own FTW.
Reuse your old box, mouse, KB etc, and blow a grand on the parts that count.
Spend a few hrs browsing some overclocking forums and TomsHardware.com to find the latest greatest cheapo overclocker. Then between Pricewatch and Newegg, you'll be set with a good deal on quality ----.

as far as overclocking processors right now you cant beat the pentium d 805 90$ or opteron 144 160$ im a amd fan so the choice is obvious. If you can hold off for one more month then pentium is coming out with the conroe otherwise know as the core duo 2 its broke every computing record out there already and its gonna be fairly cheap.
