so this is the sit rep...

I tried linux but i had to format my hard drive to FAT32....for some reason Linux wouldn't let me use NTFS to write...

simplyMepis and knoppix 3.9 wouldn't even detect my mouse....

formatted the drive went back under windows...

installed the drive internally and BAM....the muthafucka works...

then I lost 256 DDR ram for some reason...turned out that i un seated it by accident...

ram installed proper....back in business...

but now XP doesn't detect my CD rom and CD writer...----!!!

I think its a hard ware issue but this is more headaches than I need... the external hard drive enclosure is now housing my Iomega 250MB Zip Drive...------- ---- hasn't been used in YEARS!!!....

an update to come on my CD-rom issue...

sounds more like User error rather than the OS.

XP is probably the best bet there is. I would of course go to XP Pro, not the Home crap. XP is based on 2000NT, so it will be the most stable of the shitty Microsoft OS's

XP pro is Home w/ Networking BS ::)

Dude.. try other USB Ports.

Are you hooking it up to the ones beside where the mouse goes? Try hooking it up to where the front ones are (if equipped).

Did it work for a Fresh XP install?

One problem with xp that we found and my old work (computer shop) is that when changeing mouther boards hard drives some times have a hard time to keep the info and reuse it with the new mouther board

It sounds to me like you had a slow USB device (kb, mouse, scanner, etc) on the same USB controller as the one the plugged the HD into. If that's the case, the port will drop speed to the slowest device on it and your HD goes from 480mb/s transfer down to 1.5mb/s. Unplug all other usb devices on that controller and it will probably work fine.

Since it works internally, your MB supports 48 bit logical block addressing which is necessary for it to recognize anything over 137 megs and XP sp1 enabled that in the OS. That would have been my next suggestion..

this can be solved by reinserting the XP Cd and "repairing" the installation ;)
