My Turbo Project 89 Accord Coupe
Figured i would post to hear some comments and ideas since this is my first turbo project and i have learned a lot from this board. Well its an 89 Accord Coupe U.S. models came with a SOHC 120HP Engine and JDM had a B20A Rare DOHC 160HP 140Ft/Lbs torque from the factory. So im doing a B20A Swap with a custom turbo set up. The car now!
http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...6/fc369c14.jpg The fully built bottom end! http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...4/fc369a09.jpg Full engine http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...9/fba31c9e.jpg So far i have: New Garrett T3 Super 60 Spearco FMIC Custom Charge Pipes Ludespeed Downpipe/Turbo Manifold Fully built bottom end (wiseco 8.5:1) I plan on using: MSD BTM Vortec SFMU Greddy Type S BOV Tial Wastegate Cometic Head Gasket Manual Boost Contoller Probably and AFC to control Air/Fuel until i do a stand alone setup if i ever do..... I have had issues with ECU's because the stock SOHC works but obviously not at its optimal point so i was lookinga at stand alone setups or using the BTM/FMU/ and a AFC to control everything. Question and comments are very welcome since this is my first turbo project and im going by other peoples experiences and setups. Thanks Rob! |
Re:My Turbo Project 89 Accord Coupe
Nice work.
I would suggest using the AFC and not the FMU. You don't need the FMU with the AFC and since you have a built bottom end I would think you would want to run a bit more than what the FMU could handle. __________________ Best Car Insurance | Auto Protection Today | FREE Trade-In Quote |
Re:My Turbo Project 89 Accord Coupe
Thanks Dr.Boost,
I have just recently started reading up on the AFC and i noticed that i have not seen many of you guys running FMU's. I am learning from you guys and i have a lot more to find out but i wont be installing it till winter or early spring. So i will keep reading the AFC topics. |
Re:My Turbo Project 89 Accord Coupe
FMU's are fine for low boost applications, but since you have a built bottom end I'm sure you plan on running some boost. Plus a 12:1 FMU would put your fuel pressure at about 220 psi at 15 pounds of boost. :o
I'm sure you will be much happier with the AFC. :) __________________ Best Car Insurance | Auto Protection Today | FREE Trade-In Quote |

Re:My Turbo Project 89 Accord Coupe
Thats a pretty ------- clean accord...
I'm digging your setup! |
Re:My Turbo Project 89 Accord Coupe
YOU CAN USE GHETTODYNE ON YOUR CAR!! www.ghettodyne.com so you have a standalone !@! my friend is using ghettodyne on his 89 accord. its black with the stock engine, it runs just fine. I think we used a PM6? ecu on it.

Re:My Turbo Project 89 Accord Coupe
---- i just dropped a new motor into my 89 accord Lxi, let me know how the turboing comes, ive seen little about turboing the a/b20's, why didnt you opt for the b series swap mounts and throw a b in there?

Re:My Turbo Project 89 Accord Coupe
Thanks guys now i understand why the FMU was a bad idea because yes i am doing a high boost setup because either way it was a lot of money and work so why bother for a low boost setup. I opted for the accord B20A because it already has nice torque which is hard to come by with a Honda and it was closed deck. Plus the Place Racing hardware is pretty expensive and i was not impressed with it when i helped my friend do his LS/Vtec swap. I originally was gonna do a B16A but IMO the B20A is a better base and it bolts right in other than the rear mount and its a closed deck. Both had there pros and cons but i picked up another full B20A with 5spd just for parts because the 5spds are the hardest part to get.
I will look into the pm6 ECU if i remember right its the B20A5 Prelude ecu cause Zdyne had made one ECU but they had trouble with it so they wouldnt do one for me which i originally wanted to do. |
Re:My Turbo Project 89 Accord Coupe
how much that B20A set you back, the A20A is also closed deck. after i turbo the ek i wanna turbo the accord, i spent $1600 on an engine with 5yr/100,000 warranty(brandnew longblock) i guess if i turbo the beast the warranty wont be valid anymore ;D one thing these 2liters got is more torque than the 1.6 in my civic, you can spin the tires with out reving and dropping the clutch ;D
