Default My Turbo Civic's epic story (PICS!!!)

well this is my first car, bought it in feb of '02 with my own money, unlike the rest of the kids at my highschool. now i'm a junior in college and the car has come a long way since then. '92 cx

it was a mess, the guy got the oil changed once a year and never waxed nor cleaned the engine bay so it was a mess. the inside is nice and the body is in great shape for a 92. i got white 17's at first cause i needed tires and also didn't want to keep the stock 13's. over the summer realized the engine was gay and decided to do a swap.....keep in mind at this time i didn't know ----. well bought a zc engine that was converted for obd1....ghettoly i might add.

(well my dumbass finally figured out how to post pics and actually took some too. hopefully no red x's or i'll kill myself.)

the zc engine
just wanted something better than the 70hp in there without spending shitloads.
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

this probably adds like 3-4hp as well
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

anyway, get the engine my freshmand year of college in october and start reading the haynes to learn the ropes.
plan to do the swap over christmas.
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg
a picture i took of my friends working hard at school for halloween.

anyway, heres the car jacked up getting ready to lose the old piece of ----.
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

heres the new engine in then. by the way, i started taking it out over christmas and didn't have it out and the new one in till like april. i know it was a long ------- time!!
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

also got an aem short air intake, crane ignition, and magnaflow exhaust. the dc header came with the engine.
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg
figure this adds like .25-.75hp too!!

the new exhaust is 2.25" which is huge over the stock ----.
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg
another 6hp...... !!

http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg
whoops, another pic i took of my roomate at school

assessment of engine swap:
it was much better than the stock turd. it took a while to get all the wiring right and getting it to run, forced me to learn ---- though. afterall, this was about the time i stumbled across this website which has become my bible. well i started to think about turbo while it still ran like ----. played with several ecu's..cx,dx, and eventually ls. all had there downfalls. i also bought and switched out the cx tranny i used with an ex one. the pulls to 85mph in 2nd gear were cool but the low end was unbearable. i eventually made it to the track softmore year. a super duper fast 17.0......wow, was i happy !! between me ------- sucking at driving, the 17's, and the fact that the engine still ran like ----, i decided some drastic measures needed taken. i found the obd1 zc program from australia, p29, and bought the moates burner and put it in. holy ---- what a differance! i also put on kyb agx's and some ground controls to help with the horrible wheel hop i had. by the time this was all done, i had accumulated all the neccesary components for the turbo setup. this meant the car ran only for like a month before i tore it apart again. with hmt as my guide, i finished my first turbo project in about 3 weeks. i lost my garage space when my little bro blew up our caravan engine so had to do all the work outside.

the setup is:
14b turbo with ported cx manifold
2.5" downpipe and charge pipes
2.5" random tech cat
turbo xs bov (loud)
tyrus fmi
dsm blue top 450's
uberdata, running between 8 and 10 psi, depending on what it wants to run

http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

note the oil drips
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

heres what i ended up doing with the turbo pipe. i got a 1/4" piece of steel and cut/drilled it to fit the compressor housing. then bought/cut/bent a 2" to 2 1/2" exhaust expander to make the turn. welded and cleaned it all up....works good so far.
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

now heres a few problems. the distributor is currently held on my 1 bolt.
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

my oil drain line which i spent a shitload of time on leaks....tons of oil. the braze has cracked probably due to vibration.
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

not that i'm going to need it since i bought a zeitronix wideband, but the airfuel gauge doesn't work. i still have to paint and secure the gauge pod when thats fixed. its funny when somebody driving next to you watches you struggle to get it to stop falling on you with the visor.
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg
also check out the auto gauge cluster...needed a tach and didn't want one of those big ugly *** ones.

lastly no hmt car is safe without a backseat garage
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...MXk1NDE%3D.jpg

here are some pics of what it looks like now

i like it and think she looks pretty clean. i recently bought a set of 15" rota subzero's in bronze with falken azenis tires. haven't put'm on yet since i'm installing skunk2 camber kits on the front...bad alignment. the car is back home now after 3 quarts of oil during a 100 mile drive i'm going to try and fix all the ---- i've put off for the last year.

turbo assessment:
i love my car now. it use to be loud as hell which i hated. now i can't even hear the exhaust, it's mostly just the turbo and bov. the low end power is beautiful!! i still need to find time to hookup the wideband so i can take it to the track. i don't take it over 5000rmp since i'm only running a basemap. it'll break the 17's loose at 5000 in 1st which is pretty sweet and a big change. it spools up pretty quick and especially fast here in western PA with all the hills. gas mileage started out at 20 which was down from 33. once i changed some of the low end tables in uberdata, i've gotten back up to 29 on the last 4 tanks, a lot of hard driving too. the car is so sweet now and all i have to do is fix the million and one things wrong with it.

thanks to everyone on here for leading the way!!
couln't have done it without you.

let me know what you think....

Might be more interesting if we didn't have to click on each pic (make them viewable through the site itself)

EDIT: Dude, you going to the zeli drags tonight? If so, take the car! I want to see it We should meet up sometime, I'd like to see this fine piece of automotive machinery

yeah oil leaks suck... especially when their on the oil return flange. and especially when it leaks all over your hot *** downpipe everytime you stop at a light... and people stare at you funny cause your car smells like burnt oil....
