my ssautorant

so.... yeah, before i really knew anything about turbo manifolds, i went ahead and shat away $350 for an OBX turbo manifold form ssautoshit.com

here's the story...... i have finally finished all the engine work on this moneypit of a car that i have. it still looks like a piece of ----, but under the hood, it's fantastic. especially with my ssautochrome-gleaming manifold. i have a 1,000 mile break-in period for the rebuilt motor, so i've been keeping the car at low RPM's with 0 psi. At around 850 miles into the break-in, my integra started to sound like a hemi-powered dodge ram. when i popped the hood, here's what i found:

WOW..... what a piece of ----! it didn't even last 1,000 miles at low RPM's.

So, here's my dilema..... i have gotten into contact with the company, and they have already shipped me a brand-new replacement manifold. should i use it or not? if i use the new one, it's a direct bolt-on. if i don't use it, i will have to find a new manifold, and remake the downpipe, and the cutome charge piping going to the intercooler.

some advice would be appreciated..... i'd also like to be told how stupid i am, and how much i should kill myself....

please fire away.

holy ---- that blows ass. I say just use it anyways and reinforce the welds, and the manifold in general

Re:my ssautorant

;D
these manifolds work pretty good if you support the turbos weight to the block, not just the manifold, but the turbo itself. It should be braced enough so that you could take off the manifold and the turbo would still be in the same spot. Then it will last as long as you need it to.

OliveDrabNation 10-21-2004 03:36 PM

Re:my ssautorant

honestly, if the manifold isn't supporting the weight of the turbo, then they usually last quite a long time. Your best bet would be to run an internal wastegate, because of the thin wall stainless they use, the external mount is useless. by the way, How much do you want for the old manifold? :D

OMG, people are we looking @ that same pic? the ------- wastgate fell off, how is supporting the turbo going to fix that? the manifold is a POS bottom line

Same thing happened to mine 2 times. I re welded it and it broke in another spot. Those things are piles of crap and I wish he would stop selling them. http://www.newbieforces.com/files/SSautoshit.jpg Thats my tribute to SS autochrome >:(

Re:my ssautorant

At least yours still has some bling to it... Mine turned all gay pride rainbowish on me within 5 minutes of running it. Do yourself a favor and buy a decent manifold. It's the smartest thing I ever did for my setup.

Brace it WELL and use it

Re:my ssautorant

for $285 i think $315 with a WG flange. then this ---- doesnt happen.

this is why they are in the classifides section of homemadeturbo.com

notice there isnt any shitty products like ssautochrome in there for sale. stealthmode wont even allow SSautochrome products in the classified section.

Mine was braced well and it still cracked. The metal they use is ---- metal and way too thin. Ask BoostinLS, he's my witness since he came to pick my ass up when i was stuck on the side of the road with a wastegate in one hand and a hole in the manifold :-X

Re:my ssautorant

dude if i was you i'd fix that one, brace the waste gate mount, and run it. thet worst that could've happened is that it breake on one of the exhaust runners, since it has a brace there, it held up. the thing is those are made with
the same type of tubing the na headers are made out of. if you brace the waste gate i think it would be ok. it held for a month. what breakes it is the weight of things not the pressure inside.

MikeJ-2009 10-21-2004 05:52 PM

Re:my ssautorant

Brace the wastegate? lol (yeah right)

Have that one rewelded, wrap it with exhaust wrap, and ebay it. The new one that they sent you, ebay it. Take all the money and buy a real manifold. Shitbirds equal length should put all of your pipes and stuff in the same general location with not much to re-do. Spend the money the first time, and call it good.

And since you said so, your and idiot that needs to kill yourself. ;D ;)

why not? i braced the wg on my ssautocunt. just weld a brace from the wg flange, diagonal to the turbo flange, then run a brace from the turbo flange to the block. look here and follow these directions and it will work, also, you can pick up like a 3 ft. bar of that steel at lowes or home depot for like 3 bucks, then just cut the lengths you need and take it to a welder if you can't weld.

ithink they are actually made out of thinner material than that a local master fabricator makes all his turbo manifolds out of 16 guage ss and has never had one brake that i know of.

guess what this is made out of

Re:my ssautorant

i`ve seen OBX manifolds but they look completely different then the SS.
last time i saw the OBX (a week ago), the tubing looks a lot thicker then the old ones..
hell may be i wil "test" it out later.

Hey beau, Would something like that full race manifold be okay for the street. I was thinking of making a cazy designed manifold like that this winter just to be different

Re:my ssautorant

Sell the new manifold, reweld up the old one and sell it as well.
