My new setup is finished, lots of fun
 

Well I drove the N/A Crvtec for ~6 months with no problems, it was lots of fun but in the never ending quest for more and more power I started thinking of other options. I had lots of things I wanted to change/accomplish with a new setup, some were:

- Not a b16 tranny, while good at 1/4 mile it just plain sucks to drive on the freeway/any long road. I like to have fun with cars, but if you bump into an evo on the freeway you get to hit the gas for about 10 secconds and your at top speed, then they just keep going...

- Cheaper motor to blow up, b20z blocks arent cheap

So the oppertunity presented itself when a friend of mine got an auto 93 ls from his sister, she drove with no oil and blew the motor. He doesnt know ---- about cars but wanted to get it running and was quoted 3k+ from shops to put in a replacement. I told him I'd sell him my setup and install it for 3 grand. So I converted his car from auto-manual, non-vtec to vtec, made the new mount and long story short hes driving a very quick ls and knows abosolutely nothing about cars :P .

Now at the same time I bought a DA locally for $400 (running) and sold everything but the longblock. I actually made ~$500 for my new motor :)

I also picked up a freshly rebuilt 93 LS tranny with a new Quaife LSD for $650, So all in all the motor/tranny cost me only $150! I got my "special" clutch from Clutch specialties and all ARP hardware. Sorry for the long intro but here's where the fun started :)

My new 93 LS tranny with Quaife LSD, which I have to say is probably the single best upgrade other than turboing your car, its nice to actually USE the power you make *edit* I thought having both tires get power would accomplish a lot more, I still have absolutely no traction in first seccond and ~1/2 of 3rd. I can get OK traction if I do a 30mph roll on in seccond:

One of the analog outputs from the LC-1 goes directly into the ecu, replacing the narrow band o2 and allowing me to datalog straight through the ecu. The other output goes into my narrow band o2 gauge so I still have a way to monitor the a/f, although its not quite as precise as a wideband gauge, it is still much better than narrowband.

Then I put the motor in and started to cut/fit my new FMIC, which I got really lucky and picked up from a local DSM guy for $80. I had a buddy who welds "choppers" for a living reweld the in/outlets, they used to come out really shitty. I had to cut the ---- outta the bumper support for fitment, no biggie, just better not hit a pole ;)

Next was to start my charge piping, luckly we have one of the two Summit Racing warehouses in the country here, so it was just a quick drive for all my mandrel bends. All of the piping on my car from turbo to throttle body and turbo to tailpipe is made by me with 2.5" mandrell bends:

All of the welds that cant be seen when the car is put back together I covered in jb weld, just some insurrance (they are welded with a HF mig) *edit* the pipes are holding great with 6lbs of boost, haven't upped it yet but I have no leaks, the HF welder did a great job.

I just did a quick fit with the turbo/manifold to check and see if I could possibly use a full size radiator, didnt work at all so I went to Autozone and got a dual core Del Sol radiator with a lifetime warranty for $119. One thing I REALLY didnt want to do was have it tilted back, the whole car is pretty much perfect so I didnt want the engine bay looking like ----. So reluctantly I cut part of the hood out (which will be cleaned up a whole lot) and modified the crap out of the front crossmember, now my EG radiator/slim fan fits great, no clearance issues at all.

Then I thought I should weld the pieces back together to I can at least retain some of its original strength.

Then I got the manifold and piping fitted up and started with the downpipe. Its not perfect but flows pretty damn good from what I can tell. I'm sure I could have done better but I wanted to finish the setup :P Its got a 10" flex section, I decided to go with the big flex section after reading a few people having problems cracking REV-HARD manifolds...Don't want any of that.

Took it for a couple test drives and didn't blow any couplers thanks to the LSDmotorsports silicone couplers and T-bolt clamps so I put the bumper back on and this is the finish product. (o ya I have to say get the damn t-bolts bitches, the are SOOOOO much stronger than the POS hose clamps, its not even compareable)

We raced from a 30mph roll on to about 75mph, pulled him by a good 4-5 cars
CBR600RR, again about 30mph roll on, he was next to my door, I felt great beating a new bike :y

Thanks guys, Its all thanks to HMT, I've learned here for years and had tons of setups, after a while it just gets old half assing everything. Its fun to go fast for cheap but its really nice to have a clean car and know that nothing is done wrong. DEFINATELY brings the price through the roof though. I'm sure I spent way more than your average "kit" but I built it and I love it :y

They definately are, we only raced from ~30-~70, I had to stop due to traffic, but in all honesty I think he would have started to pull me, cars and bikes are hard to compare. I have no idea what his RPM's were, he may have started at only 7-8k rpm which would not be "ideal" for a 15k rpm streetbike. It was just fun to stay next to a bike

Ya that truck is badass, I'm sure he could pull the bike non-stop, I was just at the perfect rpm for my setup and I think he wasn't, but ---- it, it felt great to not have a bike fly away like past setups hehe

Your setup came out looking really good.Its cool to see HMT peoples evolution towards cleaner and cleaner setups.I like the direction its going as there is still many classic HMT setups poping up and lots of driveway hacking going on to keep true to the original cause.

All resentment aside, very nice setup dude. Looks like things fell into play quite nicely with the install/DA/etc, get some video up, very nice post! love the ride. ;D
