I went to my first one this weekend too, and I am addicted. The car that I went with was a......

RENTED PONTIAC GRAND PRIX

THe dealership has had my car all week (dont ask, it was a suspension install from hell. I ended up needing a new rear control arm and the part never came in).

My first run I ended up just heading way off the course, but by the end of the day I realized

1. this is ------- fun
2. Automatics suck.
3. I want my car back so bad
3. Never take your car to Twin City Honda in Savoy IL

You dont need much other than a car that would pass for being able to drive on the road. They do a "Tech Inspection", but all they really did was take a look under the hood, check the trunk, check the interior (you are not allowed to have anything in the car that could fly around while you are on the course), and make sure there was air in the tires.

You also need a helmet (and a drivers liscence), but they had loaners there (helmets, not liscences) for people to use.

check out www.scca.org you gott buy the ?GCR? -the rule book. it costs like $45 and I havent been able to find a boot leggd one yet. but really, yeah, just show up with a helment, your drivers lisense, nothing in your car, (anything that could fly around) and make sure all of your fluids are filled up, and nothing leaking, and you will be able to run...

Its an awsome time. I want to get into it even more...!

Re:my first autocross

I am a regular at Autocrossing for about the last year. I took second place in the Rookie group for the Arizona Region. Not bragging, but I did this in a bone stock 89 CRX Si. It's the one in the picture on the left.

For a begginner to Autox, a bone stock car is the most competitive way to start. The correction factors for the stock class make you just as competitive as if you were driving with bunch of mods to your car.

Modifications to a car will cause you to be moved into a differnt category, where your time is adjusted down. They do a whole bunch of calculations to try and make it where the same driver in different cars would get the same score.

It is cheap, $20 for about three runs. Most events are run/work events where you work the course for one group of racers, and them they work the course when you race.

It is a blast!

Pretty funny this topic came up again, my brother was just telling me next month he's going to be Autoxing with his Subaru RS for the first time. Should be cool to check out. I'll see if I can get some pics.
