My $8 DIY Catch Can! Super Duper!
 

Okay, so I have to drive my car everyday for about 30 miles, most of which is sitting in stop-and-go traffic... I have been venting my crankcase into the atmosphere and it gets a little stinky...

So, I decided it would be better for me, and the environment, if I made a catch can to trap some of those oil vapors instead of continuing to breathe them in.

I started out with an old empty bottle of SeaFoam that I had in my garage. I cut the bottom off with a can opener, stuffed it full of steel wool (to help separate the oil from the vapor), and attached some fittings...

I used 1/2" barb fittings that I found at good ole Home Depot.

Here's what I came up with!

I don't have any pics of the process because I couldn't find the camera, but I'm sure you can use your imagination, it really wasn't hard to put together.

I used JB Weld to hold the fittings in place...

I also JB Welded the bottom back on after I stuffed it with steel wool...

I then made a mounting bracket from a worm clamp that I had... I drilled a hole through it and mounted it to my frame rail like this...

Then installed the new catch can...

I ran one line from the "black box" elimintating the PCV valve, and another line from the valve cover... I also installed a breather filter on the top...

And there you go... my $8 DIY catch can.

I think next I am going to make some sort of DIY vacuum manifold... one like HotRex made but maybe a little different... I'm not sure yet!

Oh, P.S. ---- paying $30-$100+ for a damn catch can when you can make one for much less!

Thats not gonna work! You said you have one line from the PCV breather box and the other from the valve cover. Now if I am not mistaken you are going to be pressurizing your crankcase and cause serious damage! You need to route something pre-turbo to get a vacuum source on the PVC side.

Okay. One goes to the valve cover and the other goes to the......? I'm lost right there. Can you tell me where the other one goes or snap a pic of it? I read your write-up and I'm better with pictures. ;D What's the big deal with a catch-can anyway? What's wrong with the breather on the valve cover? Also, in the bottom of the catch-can is it a hole or did you close it back up? Thanks!

Im sure it will work. If the catch can was sealed, then yes, it would be damaging because the pressure from the crankcase and valve cover would be fighting eachother. But, because I have a filter on it, it allows both the valve cover and the crankcase to breathe freely through the steel wool and filter.

Yes, a pre-turbo vacuum source would be ideal, but I have a filter directly on the turbo, so there is no way for me to do it that way.

The other tube goes to where the PCV valve used to be. I will see if I can get a picture of it. Normally, the PCV valve is connected to a nipple on the IM, but if there is positive pressure in the IM the PCV valve shuts and doesn't allow effective crankcase ventilation... by removing the PCV valve and running a line to the catch can, I am allowing the crankcase to breathe freely both in vacuum and while in boost.

I sealed the bottom up, it really shouldn't fill up that fast at all. I will just take the filter off and turn it upside down to drain the oil if I think it's getting full. I should be able to tell by the lines, that's why I used clear tubing, so I can keep an eye on how much vapor is coming out.

You should have something pulling the gases out like you said "pre-turbo" I guess it will be alright but... There are better ways. $8 gets a thumbs up.

you need a vac source on that cath can. drill a hole in the top of your cars air filter and Jb weld a barb fitting in,

thats what I did. then plug the top of the catch can, and put that little air filter directly onto your valve cover breather hole. or instead, drill two hole sin the top of your air filter and run then hose from your valve cover breather to there. Your piston rings will appreciate the added seal.

I believe you also need a drain valve ;)
