Musical Curiousity

What do people listen to?
I have an electic view of music...
I listen to new age, heavy metal, rock, alternative, country, techno, industrial, and classical. Really depends on the mood. Just curious what other people like and what your favorite musicians are and why?

I enjoy Rage Against the Machine - mostly because of the song "Wake Up" which was a real "wake up" call for me. Then of course, there is TOOL perhaps the two most influential rock bands of the 80s. I don't know for sure.

As far as alternative/new age... Enya is gorgeous and has the best voice in the world :)

Re:Musical Curiousity

What type of electronic music do you listen to i seriously hope you dont listen to actual techno? Trance, house, breaks are the only way to go.

Chacko 05-02-2004 03:01 AM

Re:Musical Curiousity

Lots of techno... though generally its trance.

Some of the CDs I own would include the earlier works of Paul Oakenfield, Brainbug, Art of Trance, BT, Gyrate, Fluke, Lucid, and Omar Santana (he has the best of the songs IMO).

Re:Musical Curiousity

big difference between trance and techno I would have to be on acid to enjoy techno but trance just gets me hyped and ready to hit the club or just to be energetic :) dj Irene pwnz joo only badass house dj that can get away with mixin in some old school blues and jazz and make it sound absolutely badass.

Gyrate is a tool--he lives here and is a total prick. He can dance like a mofo though.

Not much into music now, but I do enjoy hip hop (mostly the underground ----, not too much of the mainstream stuff). I also find myself listening to r&b and the oldie oldies like the station k-big and coast and Kiis. I guess I just listen to whatever feels good to my ears, but sometimes I hate the radio and have to turn it off >:(. But no real preference anymore.

Re:Musical Curiousity

I'll listen to anything, but personally I like all types of trance (vocal, melodic, hard you name it). It seems to be the only music I actually feel and have a love for. Right now I pretty much just mix and spin records, but hopefully soon I'll get into producing tracks etc.

Re:Musical Curiousity

Classical rock is my favorite, mostly from the 60's and some 70's. However, I love all types of rock, and mostly everything else as well. I hate most hip-hop, rap. Sorry if you like it. Also, some country gets on my nerves. But I have an open mind to all music, if its good I'll listen to it.

Trance download goldwave you can hook your turntables up to your computer and record also it has some badass editing ---- where you cn do pretty much anything you can think of to your music once youve spun a set and recorded it. Thats how me and some friends make demos and all are cds.

Re:Musical Curiousity

I play a casio keyboard :) its fun to make weird noises but I decided just recently to sell it :(

BTW I also don't really don't like hip hop I don't know what it is, maybe the culture but I guess its because its really just poetry (I mean rhyming and words) vs. instrumentals. And I enjoy instrumentals. But when they mix sometimes its great, like Rage, Limp Bisquick, POD...

When it comes to country, there are some good songs, and then there are some that are just so ------- annoying.

You got to love some of Willie Nelson's classic songs. :)

Re:Musical Curiousity

I listen to stuff like 311 for the rock/musical factor, and I listen to stuff like Alan Jackson, Kenney Chesney, and Brad Paisley for the "white boy" factor. ;)

Re:Musical Curiousity

Oh yes by the way for any genre of music you like you can generally find some awesome streaming music at
http://www.shoutcast.com

Personally I listen to Chronix Aggression (www.chronixradio.com) and some of the New Age frequently. Always be sure to look for a bitrate of 128, otherwise the quality of the songs blows ass :)

Chacko 05-02-2004 06:03 PM

Re:Musical Curiousity

I also have to add in that the following bands kick(ed) ass:

CandleBox
Type O'Negative
and Filter :)

Re:Musical Curiousity

This music question is a tough one, i listen to just about everything. However 90% of the time i listen to rap.. i love the older ---- from nate, warren g and snoop.. However i think my favorite music is tekno/ trance ----... whenever it comes on i never change it and it gets me pumped up sick. a good trance beat always give me a reason to go full blast with the radio as well. Theres just no good trance stations on the radio (that i know of) and i never buy cd's so i find myself listening to rap and r&b

Tekno9998 I'll download that program and check it out. Sounds pretty cool and would actually help me out to replay and hear how I actually sound (and fix my problems ;))

SUBLIME best band ever. Hands down
but i like listening to just about everyone. although i don't really get into country or christian rock or any of that ----!

y49crxsi 05-02-2004 11:03 PM

Re:Musical Curiousity

yes, sublime was awesome, it just sucks, cause they arent comign out with any new ----, all becasue of his drug problem, and overdose, with no one there to help him, but hey, do you think his music would have been teh same if he did it sober?

Chacko 05-02-2004 11:07 PM

Re:Musical Curiousity

dunno think the beach boys could have been as successful without the drugs?

Theoritically it would seem that alot of "street" drugs effect the same portions of the brain that cause stress for musical purposes. Creating inspiration, or perhaps triggering some sort of an internal rhythym.

Re:Musical Curiousity

I ilke pretty much any thing I listen on a regular basis to country, classic rock, emo punk. If you like.
Some of my favorites are Chicago, the ataris, luck boys confusion, stevie ray vaughn dave matthews.
If your into guitar some great players are dave matthews, stevie ray vaughn, john mayer(yes he is a great guitar player but not the new radio ----, his old acoustic ---- is good), the band yes, kenny wayne shepard, and of course my band.

I can agree with you 100%. Country pisses me off and I can't listen to it. I'm not into music really anymore. I hate the radio. They never play anything good and it's alwasy just the same lame ass songs over and over again. I listen to the radio all day long at work to stop myself from going insane, but sometimes I have to shut it off because I get sick of hearing the same ---- over and over again.

Dude, I was telling my friend about you. He's crazy into music and he just bought all this stuff for recording. (Pro tools for his computer, ect...) He has the ear to make some good instrumental stuff or to record bands and such, but he's got all this new stuff, but he needs to start working more on more serious stuff. I told him about your post where you said you make beats for fake ass rappers, and I know he can totally do that. What do you think would be a good starting point to make that small loot to get him moving on something. My friend is really passionate about this stuff, except he has "hobby a.d.d." He'll want to do one thing one day, and then start something totally different the next. Any good advice I should give him or websites for people that make music on thier own?
I told him he should start a website for other music nerds to sit there and make different ----. hahaha. He's really talented, but I would just hate for him to loose focus because he couldn't figure out where he should go with it. Making it is one thing. Making money off it is a whole nother thing.

Depends on the tables you got, but if recording direct into a computer we have always experienced a lack of depth in bass and general poor standard of reproduction. The best protocol to use would be get yourself a mini disc player/recorder and record into it from your tables/decks and then dump it into the compouter for track splitting and editing, it's what ALL of my friends do, even my buddies who do the live gigs and concerts.

Personally I stray far away from the mainstream of music, I do like many grades of electronic music (yes techno is just an umbrella term). Trance was okay back a few years ago, when I didn't know any better, but I really can't stand it (no offense people). Most artists go mainstream, then it's music for the masses, I'm more into narrow venues.

I love the breaks, I'm the only person I know who has a passion for the breaks, I always have, always will.. back 10 years ago it was bass music (well some booty music) and the old school breaks, now I'm all about jammin' to the Nuskool Breakz.

Sounds from ILS, Hybrid (progressive breaks), Nubreed, Evil9, Kevin Beber, Gray Area, Omar Santan (his non hardcore work).. the list can go on and on (so much I can't even think of it off the top of my head).

Once one of those artists goes mainstream, I stop collecting.. must be the concept of it. I have a pretty damn big selection of music, if I'm listening to the radio it's classic rock (once again, can't stand the alternative or new rock crap).. went thru my semi-rap phase when I was 18, I realize I am white and haven't looked back on it.

Check out www.hybridized.org to download a good 6 or 7 gigs of fine quality music (totally free & legal @ high speed) if anyone is interested, there is a whole nother world out there to those of you who bought the paul okenfold cd "just cause everyone said it was cool" (but in reality totally sucks ass - IMO).

One of my buddies (CJ Vallely) in the band (www.untilwewake.com) does professional recording in his basement. He is also a drummer, and does mixes for ---- like this.

If you have a question, post it on the forums there HE knows everything about recording.
