Multiple computers on one XP key?

I just built my first computer. It's your basic AMD, sem-gaming setup. My buddy gave me a 6-1 install disc for Windows XP, and I installed a home edition, since I only have a key (from my laptop) for that version. I got everything going here, and it's asking me to "activate" my version of XP. It's still at SP1, so will I be okay to run my laptop and desktop on the same XP cd key? Otherwise, what's the cheapest way to get a new key? I know Vista is out, so hopefully XP will get retarted cheap. Thanks guys,

Colin

I am almost positive that as long as its a legal copy, you can install it on all of the PC's that you own. If you have 3 PC's at the house I know you only have to buy one office and you can install that on all three as long as its home use and not business. I would assume the same for Windows. and no one should use Vista for at least another year or two so they can work the kinks out IMO.

Sounds good. It activated just fine and is downloading all the updates, so I assume there's no problem. I hear Vista is a memory hog. I see no reason to upgrade yet.

its fine if you dont download updates, but to late on that. Your other computer's mac adress has been droped off the list for being able to update windows from your XP key. Windows updates are for suckers anyway, sp1 is <3 sp2 is only ok if you disable everything that makes it sp2.

You really should install sp2... Im not going to go into it,,.. but its neccesassary as far as network security. All critical updates are a good idea to, as for the optional updateds... You dont need those. if you need a key, I have aome relief for you if you need help but i dont want to talk about it here. PM me, and ill help ya out.

Thanks for that, but I found an old desktop that had XP on it. So I used that. Now to explore overclocking :l

Re: Multiple computers on one XP key?

When you authorize an XP install the information is sent to MS's database. After 90 days the info is deleted. I know this because I called up MS's tech support one day because I had to format a few weeks after a fresh install because of DirectX issues. The tech guy told me and sure enough I tried to activate the same key a few months ago and it worked. So MS doesn't keep the stuff on record forever, just 90 days.
