motor finally shit on me (UPDATE)
I wanted to blow it, but not this early. I was planning to build a bigger stronger block in the winter. but it blew in the summer.
I just went for a joy ride through the city, and the engine got hot around 220* f so I stop by the shoppette to get some beer and a movie decided to refresh my methanol mix from 50/50 and add a bottle of heet to the mixture. got on the autobahn, perfect a race audi s4. flip the high boost switch and left him like he was standing still, egt clinbing up in the 1700* f range I backed off and let him catch his momentum, then tore into him again. nasty smell from exhaust and grey smoke smell like burning ----, and rough accelleration I slowed down and cruise home when I got home all I hear is this loud knocking comming out of the motor sound like ---- knocking around in the oil pan. I think my bearings are gone. perfect time to start my 2.0l ls/vtec Golden eagle sleeved built. I will be in miami on monday for 2 weeks so I will be shopping for a new, or used golden eagle block. |

What do you have for tuning? How do you know the guy in the Audi was racing you? |

I just did another inspection on the car, it still runs strong and not smoking, still have oil pressure, and idle normal, its just this loud knocking.
I instect all the spark plugs, and they look good. |

I do this on the daily so the car has served its time well, daily ripping in 5th gear at high rpms |

You've been overheating and beating down on that engine for a long, long time, Leroy. You keep mentioning overheating issues. I'm surprised it's lasted this long.
Frankly, you've probably been feeding it too much ignition timing and/or you have a headgasket issue. For a long, long time. I'd do a leakdown test and check mains/rods before you so much as drive the car again. I can understand not giving a ---- and wanting to build a new setup, but frankly you probably have something well worth salvaging. |

I know ! I plan to reuse the head crank and rods if they are in good shape. but the block is going to the pile or send in as a core, I need a break from this game anyway.
I plan on getting my motorcycle license next week, so I might switch gears a little, but I will still build my civic, I am gonna have to sell one of my cars though. I am only allowed to have 3 vehicles registered at a time. so I will park the civic for a while. |

You tuned it yourself, right? Can you find a dyno and drop some money for a couple or three hours, either on this setup if you think it's fixable or on the next? I'd like to give you a list of tips and tricks and see what you can make of it.

yes me and my boy tuned it, but we are having a hard time finding a all wheel drive dyno, I only found one so far at bosch the charges 40 euros a run, and they max out at 300whp, the last time I used them I was smoking my tires at 336whp on a t3/super 60 the next time I am gonna find one , even if I have to tow it to berlin, and take my boy's advice keep the car off the streets, run it only at the track. I will try to rebuild it, but I won't put no serious money into it, I might change the bearings and run it till the other block is ready, I am not completey done, I also have a built b16 block in my garage, I just did not want to go backwards.

I would really like some better knowledge on tuning timing, because I think I have problem in that department, I have the AFR down to a science, but EGT is kicking my ass.

i've never used one, but people say they tune out detonation they never knew was there.(supposedly) when i get a wideband, i will also make one for myself to tune with. |

I just tore the motor down, found out that I spun the number 3 rod bearing, good thing I caught before it was too late, no additional damage, crank looks great still polished and smooth. the rod look reusable buts it blue from the friction heat. so I am gonna replace it. will rebuild this until I get my sleeved block.
question for the people who have experience only: since I took the whole motor apart, is it fine to use a ball hone to pass through the cylinders without having to replacing the rings? only doing this because rings were seated but I removed them so they may need a new hone |

The rod's temper is just as ruined. Put it on the wall as a trophy or throw it away.
You need to rehone in order to seat new rings. If the bores look mint with good crosshatching, you just need a light glaze break hone. All in all not as bad as it could be - a few hundred bucks and you're back in the saddle assraping all comers. :) |

eagle rods are rated at 900hp. ARP 2000 with 3/8 bolts, 7/16 head. thats the ones I have.

The pre-ARP 2000 bolt rods are known good to 1200 on a couple of different cars, they only had problems spinning past 9k reliably. Keep in mind 1200whp on an Eagle is like 250whp on a D16 rod... Great budget pieces, they are Carillo clones.

I just came from the machine shop, to get the rods checked, they said they are reusable as is. the surfaces are smooth, and diameter even. so I'll be back spanking ass soon. but my next build will come soon.
