no i never said they were rated at that.

they made around and over 600 horse but were rated back in late 60s early 70s far lower for insurance reasons.

the only thing GM made production that is rated at 500 horse or close is the c6 z06 and it hasnt came out yet.

the all alum 427 and some of the 454s made close to 600 horse stock.

Although few knew it at the time, 1970 marked the pinnacle of the Muscle Car era. Thereafter, rising insurance and fuel economy concerns effectively drove these cars to extinction, but, while the lived, muscle cars ruled the streets. At the top of the Muscle Car hill stood the awesome 1970 Chevelle ss454. When equipped with the LS6 option, the SS454 is likely the fastest production car ever built.

Truly the "ultimate" muscle car, the LS6 Chevelle did everything well. Handling, braking, and comfort were the strong points, but the LS6 454's forte was brute force and acceleration. Fed by a Holley 800 cfm four barrel carb, the LS6 was conservatively rated at 450 horsepower and 500 lb.ft of torque, but in reality it was much more potent. Cold air was fed into the carb by the cowl-induction louver in the hood which opened under heavy acceleration. Quarter mile times of just over 13 seconds at over 110 mph were easily achievable.

1970 LS6
454 ci
450 hp
500 ft/lb

1970 Buick 455

350 hp
510 ft/lb at 2800

Quote from musclecar club .com

Chevrolet 427 ZL1 1969

The ZL1 engine was based on the regular Chevrolet 427 engine. However, instead of the regular iron-block and head L72 found in the regular 427 engine, the ZL1 sported aluminum heads and the first aluminum block ever made by Chevrolet. It shared the L88 aluminum head/iron block's engine rating of 430bhp but made closer to 500bhp -- making it probably the most powerful engine Chevrolet ever offered to the public. And the engine weighed just 500 pounds, the same as Chevy's 327 small block. The ZL-1 was made available only for 1969 under COPO 9560 and Chevrolet needed to install 50 copies to qualify the ZL1 Camaro for racing. Chevrolet eventually built 69 Camaros and 2 Corvettes with the ZL1 engine. ZL1 cars were blessed with a 5 year/50,000 mile warranty and were fully street legal. With factory exhausts and tires, ZL1 Camaros could turn low 13s; with headers and slicks, they could turn 11.6s @ 122mph. This was the fastest car ever produced by Chevrolet. Performance had its price - $4,160 for the ZL1 engine alone pushing the price of the Camaro ZL1 to an unbelieveable $7,200 (about double the price for a SS396 Camaro).

Ratings:
427 V8 430bhp@5200rpm, 450lb-ft@4400rpm

Installation:
1969 Chevrolet Camaros: 69.
1969 Chevrolet Corvettes: 2

Total Production: 71.

And the new ls6 will be pretty much the best motor ever

---- that, Ford FE-427 SOHC was over 600 hp and revved 7000+. Very simple adaptation of roller OHC heads to a basic side-oiler block. Ford ------- rules.
