Mineral Oil PC
Well I just submerged my PC in mineral oil. I was tired of hearing the fans all the time. I feel like I have acheived a new level or nerd-dom
The ups of it are that my PC is totally silent and runs a lot cooler. The power supply, MB, and video card are under the oil right now. I may or may not add the HD's. Most ppl say it is fine, because they are totally sealed. Others submerge the drives and then remove the cases so you can see the HD working. Not quite ready for that. obviously the oil is non-conductive. It is in a 10gal fish tank. It was $10 at petsmart. The oil is a bit expensive at $10/gal. http://www.---------------------------/MineralPC.jpg |

Re: Mineral Oil PC
WTF? I didnt know you can do that, I mean there has got to be some bad things about submerging your computer ih a liquid, does it not ---- anything up?
|
Re: Mineral Oil PC
the bad thing is the nasty ---- that gets in the oil. and having a greesy ass computer and cables
|
Re: Mineral Oil PC

Re: Mineral Oil PC
i will make myself usefull in this post.
#1 im assuming that the fns are all thermally speed controlled. if his components are submerged in oil, the thermister in the fan doesnt have to spin allot. infact it will spin very slowly. the oil cools the components more than the fans will. so if he has them mounted, no problem, if not, even better. #2 putting a hd in there is a no no since they have breathers in there to compensate for heating up of the internal air. if you find a hd you will notice that it might have a sticker that says do not cover hole or do not tape over. if you do get oil in it, your seek times will drop dramatically, and the rpms will drop dramatically. also, its not good for the motor. #3 water can also used. but be warned. even distilled water might be a bit risky. i would use penta water since it was manufactured electrolosis and its basically the purest water you can buy. its basicall cleaner then distilled water. water has ions that are very happy and want to bond, so when you ad like a salt or something in it like a particle, it will start to conduct. not on a massive grand scale, but it will. i suggest soaking your components iun a rubbing alchahol bath and then letting them dry in a very humid place to prevent dust particles from setling. then i would submerge it in water. the reason why this works is because when the oil heats up, it gets carried to the top, cools off, and drops below the hotter poil. this cycle happens pretty quickly and is very good, but water is a tad bit better, but instead of using expensive water and cleaning, they use oil since it cant conduct electricity with any particles in it. some people put food coloring and even neon lights in their tanks. |
Re: Mineral Oil PC
Thats kinda neet but I cant wait till you have to take it in for repairs :P

I have an aexternal USB hub so that my cables don't get oily. The only thing that gets oily are the cables that never really come out. |
Re: Mineral Oil PC
Once those USB hard drives that run off USB power come down in price, you're in like Flynn.

Re: Mineral Oil PC
Hey, I wonder how ppl would react if I tried to load an oily fishtank into their car when they roll up for tuning?

Not if I could get that box of tissues incorporated somehow into the case. |
Re: Mineral Oil PC
hum, never thought about this. I think I'm going to try this out.
|
Re: Mineral Oil PC
I think a ThermalRight SI-120 with a low speed 120mm fan would have worked just as well if not better.
|
Re: Mineral Oil PC
Damn Cray... you topped the cake on this one. You don't make too many threads, hell I don't remember the last one you made at all before this one! But this is the cats ass. I'll have to ask my bro about this since he's a big PC nerd and see if he ever heard of this.

Re: Mineral Oil PC
id think about trying that but i would cry if my 6800gt burnt up. what does the core temp stay at on your 660gt under oil compaired to before? like 50ºc in air since it was oc'ed? how much under the oil.
