Do yourself a favor and get one with the gas option. It's night and day, and having a degree in "flux" welding still doesn't have ---- on a guy using gas for the first time. ;)

I don't think that second one is good to start either. Something about a "tig" welder for $199 doesn't make sense, and will probably end up being a joke.

I was in your same situation. I didn't want to spend lots of money for something that I was just going to "play" with. I looked up and down. I couldn't make myself spend $200 on the harbor freight stuff cause I just didn't trust it. That saying "you get what you pay for" started haunting me. I finally broke down and spent like $600 on the lincoln 135t with the gas and all that. It was more than I wanted to spend, but everything else I think is less than I wanted to buy.

Plus, if you go to sears and buy it with one of thier credit cards you get 0% interest for ??? months or whatever. As much as I like to buy the bare minimum for stuff I want, I don't think the HMT way of thinking applies to welders. :-\

Yeah this is why I asked. A $200 tig didnt sound all that great to me ether. But who knows. I wish my Dad wouldnt have sold everything he owned when he moved. That SOB had a 18wheeler full of ----.

Re: Mig wire welding machine?

lol, i have a centry like 150 mig, with gas, it works great for welding charge pipes, exhaust, makeing custom brackets and ----. its small, but looks can be deciving the things like 70 pounds lol. its not alot but for a small welder it is, u dont expect it. deff get a good gas mig, there like 250-700 for a decent one that will do w/e u want, and thats deff not a tig lol, my tig thats on the way is a miller sincrowave 180sx, does, stainless, alum and mild, and it cost me a little over 1600, but thats with gas alot of welding filler, spare parts, welding helmet and ----, i know the people that own the welding place, they threw in a few things because i purchased the welder. i only use tig for nice looking and persison work, like manifolds, dps, somtimes charg pipes, and misc suspention. but mig will do the trick. for now.

and the helmet is a electronic shade helmet, my old one kinda took a ----. it helps when you can see threw the lense and then when u arc it gos dark. just to help u see wtf you are welding on.

Re: Mig wire welding machine?

A $200 tig welder would be equivalent in quality to a $5 MIG welder
